Whirring noise from headlight unit

Featured Replies

Hi all,

When I put the lights on there is a strange whirring noise coming from the headlight. The only thing I can think it can be is the headlight height adjustment. If so, what is it try to do, is it stuck or something? How can I stop it and where is the motor that may be causing the problem? So many questions?

Cheers, Normski

Do you have OEM plasma discharge lights? If not, then you shouldn't have automatic height adjustment.

Beyond that, it sounds very much like the adjuster is rounded off or stripped, so the motor is running continuously failing to set the headlight height on one side.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for the reply. No to the plasma lights, standard Octi now 15 years old but still going strong. I looked up on youtube and the is a motor in a plastic housing with a square end in the plastic drive. I'll look into a replacement but if it's a bit pricey I might just disconnect it.

Double check that the ball on the height correction motor has not come partially displaced from the socket on the headlamp reflector, (you can see the ball and socket when you remove the bulb cover reasonably easily).

I had this on mine a couple of winters ago, I clicked the ball back in and the motor settled on its adjustment and stopped whirring. Just be gentle when you click it in as the reflector is not ultra strong.

If all looks ok, then I'm with Ken, and your motor has lunched itself. Salvage yard/ebay good units can be had quite cheaply if cash is short over the lead up to christmas.
