Winter Wheel size

Featured Replies

Can anyone confirm the correct size for winter wheels to allow clearance for chains?

From what I can work out it is:

6.5J x 17

ET38

5x112

57.1mmCB

with

215/65R17 tyres?

That is what is in the owners manual.

Apart from the 5x112 and 57.1mm centre bore .......

That part is easy to confirm, as that is the same even when not winter wheels on a Kodiaq.

I see you have FREEDOM Tech status, is that like a Mechanic Technician?     Someone that knows where to get the technical spec...

Same wheels as Tiguan then. Nice and easy.

  • 2 weeks later...

Pretty sure that’s the same as a yeti too. Hope so as I’m planning to use the Erebus alloys I retained from trading in our yeti for the kodiaq’s winter boots.

I've just put all-season tyres on mine, same size as the ones it came with so 235/50 R19. I hope that I can get some kind of chains to fit on these!

There won't be enough clearance, that is why Skoda explicitly state 215/65R17 on 6.5J rims for chains.

What all seasons did you go with?

I bought  Vredstein Quatrac 5 - there isn't a great choice of all seasons in this size and they seemed to get pretty decent reviews. Can't imagine I'll need chains in Scotland, but I might need to at least carry them if I drive down to the Alps for a skiing holiday. If I can't get a set that fits then I might have to look at tyre socks as an alternative.

I am having a problem finding winter tyres for my 19" alloys.

Factory fit is 235 50 r19

Closest i can find is

Nokian WRA4 Nokian WR A4 - 245/45 R19 102V XL TL

Think i will loose 7mm clearance and that the speedo will over read by 1.5mph at 60mph

Does any think this size will cause any problems?

Or after reading the superb / octavia forums noticed lots of people up sizing profile on winter tyres.

Hence i have found a greater selection of winter tyres size 235 55 r19  (also cheaper than the standard 50 profile)

this should give me 11mm more ground clearance, softer ride and the speedo will under read by 2mph at 60mph. Although will increase mpg slightly.

Has anyone else up sized or down sized there tyres yet?

Any comments? Need to work out which way to go before buying winter tyres...... frost already here... snow next.....

The difference is if just buying Winter tyres and using in the UK where it is unlikely you will carry or put on Snow Chains and if you might need to get the size that chains can be fitted with,

or traveling to Continental Europe and countries or areas in countries where the law requires you to carry snow chains and to fit them if required,

then you certainly want winters that will allow you to fit and drive with the chains on.

Oponeo has the right size tyres for you, that where I got my All Year tyres. For winters this is the options they're showing - https://www.oponeo.co.uk/tyre-finder/s=1/winter/t=1/4x4/r=1/235-50-r19

The tyres are shipped from Germany and take about a week to arrive. You can get them shipped to a local garage who'll do the fitting for you. Shipping is included in the cost but the fitting is extra, whatever the rate the garage you use charge.

I've had a look online for chains that'll fit the 19" wheels. Good news is that while standard chains won't fit there are several options available on Roofbox.co.uk that are recommended.

Had some bad experiences with cheap winter tyre makes before so had been trying to keep to nokians but  dont have the correct tyre size for the kodiaq.

Did look at some of the other makes but the very long braking distance on wet roads is no good for me or if they are no good on ice.

So

Does anyone know if these will fit without any problems?

Goodyear Tyres / Winter Snow SUV 4x4 / Goodyear UltraGrip Performance Gen1 SUV - 235/55 R19 105V XL TL  or

Goodyear UltraGrip Performance GEN-1    255/50 R19 if they will fit on an 8j rim

Seem to have very good reviews and the price is at the top end of my budget if they will fit

Getting chains that will fit the 19" tyres is not the issue, the issue is are you going to fit them on 19"  wheels / tyres on a Kodiaq and then drive with them on,

and drive with them to where you can then remove them without any clearance issues.

I suspect not actually with a Kodiak.

I've replied on the other forum as well - if you want them to be good on ice then you need narrower tyres, not Carlos Fandango tyres.

https://www.oponeo.co.uk/tyre-article/wide-or-narrow-tyres-for-winter

  • Driving on motorways and other main roads, as well as in city centres, means you are usually driving on black asphalt. You will appreciate winter tyres the most when sudden snowfalls or black ice appear, or if you have to drive on local roads which are not cleared of snow. In these situations, it is best to use standard winter tyres with the same width as your summer tyres. If you need increased grip on ice, you can use tyres one size narrower.
  • On the other hand, if you’re driving on local roads and small towns which are not served by main roads, with only an occasional journey on a clear surface, than you will have a different experience during a snowy winter. In these cases, long journeys could take place on roads partially or completely covered in snow. Under these conditions, a narrow winter tyre (with a width two sizes smaller) is recommended.
  • If you have limited driving skills or experience on snow-covered surfaces, or just want to be sure you can through the harshest of conditions, should use winter tyres for extreme road conditions. In terms of width, these can be either one or two sizes smaller than your summer tyres.
  • If you drive on a lot of mountain roads, are rarely-used local roads in areas with heavy snowfall, you may require specially selected tyres. This is because the chances of snow being blown onto the road, combined with the steep slopes mountains generally offer, require more specialised options.

If you want them to be good on ice and there is  a lot of ice you will have studded tyres, but that is not going to be in the UK or anyplace else not Ice and snow packed for long periods,

so you will want 'friction' tyres, and if you have a big vehicle then the proper Winter Tyres as long as not stupid wide are just fine, as you are unlikely to be on untreated ice,

if you are then a good widish tyres for icy roads is as good as a narrow tyre that is or is not suitable.

No harm in going narrower for winter if you are having much of a winter, but of the days between now and March 2018 how many days are you going to drive on perfectly normal roads without low temperatures?

If you are fitting all year tyres that are Winter Certified and keeping them on all year then you may well not want to go narrower than the summer tyres.
