Toyota Highlander & Mazda CX-9

Featured Replies

We're in the market for a large (7 seater) SUV.

An annual mileage of circa 8,000 miles means a petrol makes the most sense.

I can't help thinking choice in the UK is severely limited, there is more choice if looking at diesel but we're lagging behind for petrol options. As it happens the Skoda Kodiaq ticks all the boxes, despite a desire to try something different to Skoda (on our 4th).

I'm over in Australia and New Zealand with work and have seen two cars I'd seriously consider if available in the UK. Perhaps I'm in the minority but the market for large petrol SUV's must be growing. They are already available in right-hand drive, perhaps I should buy one here and stick it in a shipping container!

Toyota Highlander (New Zealand) & Kluger (Australia), bigger than the Rav-4 but not huge like the Land Cruiser...

Mazda CX-9, more space than the CX-5...

Looks like it'll have to be a Kodiaq.

That Mazda is a good looking vehicle.

As for petrol options, it's worse in Ireland though we hear its changing. From what I could see last month - it is still a case of petrol only being on poverty spec if at all, sometimes mid range spec.  Diesel is still very much King on anything but smaller cars.

Here is the solution for those that will drive a diesel, and Much Cheapness. also little chance of someone stealing it.

Yep, that’s ugly. If only they allowed blacked out windows in the front then no one could see you driving it.

I park my Alhambra next to one occasionally and can not believe the size of them, and the ugliness, but the interior looks comfy.

Thought about seeing just how cheap one could be bought for. with a elevation roof it could be a 'happy camper'.

I actually like that Toyota, looks like the Discovery Sport from the back and probably more reliable than one too.

I have a family member with a CX 9. Nice car but bloody 5m long - no thanks.

So the only true competitors for the petrol Kodiaq is the Range Rover Sport, Discovery, Discovery Sport, Audi Q7, Volvo XC90 and Ssangyong Turismo?

Hyundai Santa Fe

If you want to spend & get comfort you go VW Caravelle 4Motion or maybe Mercedes GLE and as well get a AMG.

The Hyundai Santa Fe is only available with a diesel engine in the UK.

Anything from VW, Audi, Mercedes, Volvo and Land Rover etc. are all well out of my price range.

The Kodiaq is actually well priced for what you get, shame there aren't any decent competitors in the same price bracket.

I vaguely remember reading a few months back that after customer feedback on the lack of a 7 seat option with the CX5, Mazda are considering bringing out a 7 seat CX7 or a CX9 for the UK in late 2018/early 2019.

(just done a Google search and found this article which may have been where I read it. Not read the actual article I've posted as I don't want to give myself eyestrain reading it on my phone!)

Good find!

Shame to read the first line though...

Big seven-seat Mazda CX-9 SUV ‘a possibility’ in Europe but would need diesel engine

Petrol will do just fine thanks. Although the article was published back in March 2016 when diesel was still all-the-rage. How things change!

Are you wanting a 7 seater with AWD?

If not SEAT still do a Alhambra 1.4TSI 150ps manual.

The Alhambra is a wise choice, one of its biggest appeals to me is that you never see another one, I love a rare car in a sea of Nissan Qashqai's and Ford Fiesta's. It's also better looking than the Sharan too.

As a proper seven seater with luggage space and sliding doors it is the obvious choice, alas I've been suckered into the whole SUV vs. MPV marketing machine.

Form over function dictates that the wife needs to sit higher and have the luxury of bigger spongy tyres and suspension for the kerb outside school!

She needs to go sit in one then and pump the seat up and see the view.  The plush ones do not have the 225/60 r 16,s I have on though, perfect for touch parking, and the snow I was driving in and on today. Continental ContiSeal winters fitted.
