Yeti 110 running rough when cold

Featured Replies

The wife's 2011 Yeti 110 front wheel drive has now covered over 1000,000 miles and after starting up it runs roughly with lumpy running around 2,000 rpm and at tickover.

Did treat it to a new set of Bosch glow plugs at 90,000 miles and it seemed ok then. Once the temp reaches around 50-55* centigrade it smoothes out and then runs as normal? Had connected my own HEX - V2 to the diagnosis port and on auto scan everything comes up with no fault found. I don't no much about diesel engines so cannot look through the many items up for show on the engine scan as percentages and spot anything that is out of order. She tells me this happens now nearly every morning she drives down the road and once warm it runs smoothly for her 50 mile journey to work.

Has anybody come across this problem or know how to cure it. Live just outside East Norwich and when she had taken it to the local Norwich Skoda dealer they had left bolts off cambelt change and another time not changed the fuel filter on the few times it went in so have no confidence in their ability to complete a service job professionally having pointed out on three separate occasions of leaving things off. Changed the gearbox oil for my own interest and it was a clean red colour with no metal swarf or metal particles floating around. Otherwise no other problems apart from the rough engine.

I should imagine it's just worn out and a new engine required!  :)

160k miles a year

Did i read that right 1000.000 miles??

Sorry Mike to many zero's

Should have read 100,000 miles covered and counting. That's five zero's not six. Not been round the world a few times just yet.

Will have to find somebody with diesel knowledge on these engines if at all possible to locate the problem with oxygen sensors or something else?

Maybe glow plugs. Or dpf. I don't know much about diesels.

Usual question,,,,,,has it had the fix? Mileage isn’t that high

Glow plugs only operational to get started - no influence when running.

Hi Sad555

Deliberately left the so called update to the software alone. Did not want to add to problems with the car.

As in my earlier email changed the glow plugs at around 90,000 miles as the  HEX-V2 showed a fault with two plugs. As we had rough starting up before. Now it seems to have returned again.

Will measure the resistance of the plugs when it warms up a little outside (1.5*C) and check the cap connections to the glow plugs later this weekend.

Should have stuck to petrol engines I know a lot more about when it comes to servicing.

Sounds like partly blocked oil feed pipes (get carbon deposits) to turbo

Effect is when cold, the oil circulates less easily.   Once warm the oil is more viscous so getting less effect.

Probably means the turbo is not running properly (if you get it changed make sure they do the oil feed pipes at same time, otherwise problem will reoccur).  Also with new turbo and oil pipes, get new oil, oil filter etc.

HI SurreyJohn

Checked out the glow plugs and all is well in that area.

HEX-V2 software shows no faults coming up.

Engine runs rough until the oil temp reaches 50*C then engine runs as normal.

Every time the Mrs drives off in the cold weather it is that magic 50* C that seems the critical temp?

Since new oil changes have been done every 8,000 miles by myself and of course oil filters.

Any diesel mechanics out there for my Yeti 2011 110 front wheel drive?

Is your diesel always bought from the same place or supplier and if so is it worth changing who's you buy even though the basic diesel is all the same.

Is it worth trying a tank or 2 with a Diesel Additive from the likes of 'Millers Oils'.?

?

Is there always a nice clean / dry fresh air filter fitted?

Hi AwaoffSki

Been away on holiday for over a week and the engine got so bad at tickover in a traffic jam in CenterParcs we had to turn the engine off and wait over an hour for the queue to drop off trying to get out. The whole engine was shaking so badly we thought it was on its last legs before a big bang and seizure at 101,000 miles on the clock?

Looked under the bonnet and you could smell exhaust fumes coming from near the turbo at the back of the engine. Thought this was a turbo blow out so had to drop it off at our local garage in Norwich and they found the exhaust blowing out between the turbo and the DPF.

Put on a new metal collet and gasket between the two and hey presto sweet engine again.

They reckon when the unit is cold a greater gap is there forcing out more pressure from the exhaust and when we went down the road and the oil temp was reading just above 80* C the gap was less so it ran better. This had been going on for a few weeks gradually getting worse with time. A new one for me on diesel engines as the turbo was fine. HEX-V2 will not of course show this interesting effect and no faults found.

Also found the offside front coil spring had broken near the bottom of the shock absorber holding cup so had that replaced at the same time. Yeti now running again and had no other main breakdowns with it since new apart from Leaders door repair wrecking the wire harness to the main body plug and causing the battery to drain?

First set of new discs put on the front and the rear ones are original. Mrs must drive smoothly (IAM) as the rear is on its second pair of pads and the front had to have a new third set due to new front discs although there was plenty of meat left on the second pair.

Nice it's always good to hear a good outcome

Hi Mikeyd1

Always come back with an answer If possible to help out other members who might come across the same problem with their Yet.

In the New Year I have the fun of taking off the drivers door inside trim and panels after Leeder Accident Repair Centre Ltd trashed the wring harness to the main pillar cutting into them when they changed the front door and bodged the cables up with electricians pvc tape.

Will find out where other cables have been crushed or cut that might partially short out?

Will not let the Insurance company force me to take it there again.
