Petrol smell in cabin

Featured Replies

Hi All,

This week in the cold weather I am experiencing a smell of petrol in my 1.2 mk2 Fabia estate when in slow moving traffic. I can't see any obvious leaks.

Any help welcome, thanks.

Well if it was your petrol you could smell and not fumes coming in from other vehicles around you best have someone competent check out if something is wrong.

Was you tank full, not that that might matter, do you get this smell if you just start your car where it is sitting now with no other vehicles around you?

How many miles on the car, when serviced, and is the smell not coming in the rear flaps on the rear of the car, behind the bumper.

It's definitely petrol smell. Had the exhaust smell a couple of years ago and it was confirmed a leak in a breather hose, fixed and been all good since. The car is on a 2010 plate and I've had it since almost new from a main dealer. It has a full service history and done 75k miles.

If petrol smell then petrol pipes, fuel filter, and joints & the tank needs checking. to find were the petrol leaks  It is as straightforward as that.

Out of interest which Main Dealer services it?

It does not take a lot of petrol to make a strong petrol smell. I had a tiny leak on my previous car, and the smell was really strong. The cause was the smallest of leaks, and the fuel was never really visible as it evaporated down before it became visible.

The cause needs investigating sooner rather than later, the fumes are flammable and even more so if the leak is in a confined space.

Thanks Mannyo. I'll get it checked out.

AwaoffSki, I have been getting it serviced at a local indipendant garage.

Petrol smelling air freshers are never a good shout!! just my 2 cents! - Best get it looked at sooner than later as like other have said. small cabin toxic and flammable fumes... not good!

I had a look myself and found a vent hose from the engine (rocker cover ? ) to the air intake pipe adrift on the engine end. Pushed it back in and the smell has gone.
