Tyre Pressures

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've got 19" Sirius Alloys on my Estate. Tyre pressure warning was on this morning - but only having driven 30 miles on the motorway. They weren't on first thing.

Looking at the pressure recommendations (imaginatively stored inside the fuel filler cap?) there's a significant difference between  2.3 and 2.6 Bar (eco). Anyone got any views on this? Where should I be aiming? I need the big car for the occasional family fully loaded camping trip, but 80% of my mileage is just me and a motorway...  Thanks for your opinions/advice.

I have a 280 L&K Hatch with 19" wheels and set them to 2.6 Bar all round.

Different conditions can affect the TMPS, road surface, ambient temperature, etc. if pressures are borderline any of these could set it off. I have also found that the setting procedure is very important, after having the TMPS go off multiple times in the first week of ownership was mainly due to this and not an actual tyre pressure issue. The TMPS (afaik) compares the balances, etc of the wheels using the abs sensors and it does this by comparing current status to the reference set after the system is reset so the few km after a reset is critical to accurate operation. I have concluded this purely from experience and I am not an expert, others may be able to define the proper setting procedure.

Ultimately though I would agree with @MartiniB, especially with 19"s, the TPMS in the Superb requires the car is moving to make comparisons, a completely flat tyre is not as visibly noticeable on a 19" wheel due to the already low profile and reinforced sidewalls. It can be that by the time you notice the flat or the system picks it up, the tyre is ruined and you are stranded metres from the safe haven of your starting point (based on my previous VAG car with TPMS not the superb).
