Replacing engine oil after running in

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Was wondering how I have around 5000km on my Kodiaq now so it should be bedded in. Would it be worthwhile getting the engine oil changed or no? I know it's not in the intervals (I'm on variable servicing, car says around 25000km before oil change) but I'm just wondering as I've never had an Euro before and I'm used to changing oil out after running in the car.

Up to you.

I certainly would not leave the oil and filter to the Flexible / Variable Service interval if the car is owned by me and a keeper.

Lease car it gets the Manufacturers Servicing / Guidelines only and no more spent on it than needs must.

If i own it i would change at Fixed Servicing first, not at 5,000 km though,

and then every year or 16,000 km from then on.

Mine’s just had an oil service at 9000 miles. And I’m over £150 lighter, thank you very much.

As above, if it was “my” car it would get an annual change.

As it’s not, I chose variable and will Pay As I Go and may even get away with 1 service during my “ownership”.

2 at worst.

As a comparison, I chose Fixed Annual on the good lady’s Octavia so it had an oil change last week.

3 annual (birthday) services paid for up front in 2016 at an average cost of £110, if I remember correctly.

Bignij,

If you let main dealers charge for a 'Minor Service',  with that 'Free vacuum and wash',  and a lot of inspections and a report and maybe a road test, likely not,

then what you were after, the actual 'Oil filter and sump plug', and reset the Service Indicator they might well want £159 or so.

That is not an 'Oil Service' though where the Oil could have been sucked out, and the filter and plug changed and the car left on variable if you want.

ie an 'Oil and filter change / Service,  not a Minor Service or an Inspection Service.

Good or smart Dealerships used to do that at reduced costs, or with a discount voucher, as 'Customer Service' to check all was well.   that was 'Simply Clever'.

30 minutes labour, parts & VAT, and any Warranty Issues might be picked up on and they get the work / payment,

because regardless of what 'employees say',  Warranty work pays and keeps them in a job, and keeps return custom from car buyers.

I foolishly thought, as you say that it would 'only' be an oil change, since that's what the service indicator said it was, but I got a minor service. I'm not sure what extra I got for the minor service. I didn't want them to do the wash as  I don't want them to 'brillo pad' it for me. They had to jet wash it clean as they're not allowed to work on dirty cars. It was very clean to say it had only been jet washed. Any way I digress, apparently the minor service is basically a full visual check. :dull:

Better that is is done, you know a professional has cast their eyes over it, and that might be with more time given than was done at the PDI,

pity no 20% Discount Voucher when you got the car new.

So is there a full Health Check List for the car, Showing as on the Diagnostics, and any Software Updates or Enhancements done and a road test carried out?

What is the Service Indicator at now, Fixed or Variable, and does the Oil Temp show OK still?

To be honest and this is very remiss of me, I've not even checked the service book to see if they've stamped it or any paperwork. As I know the salesman, I let him organise it and pick up and drop off the car. I know the servicing is at variable and there's been no problems with oil temp. I check it regularly because my missus thinks it's running hot and doesn't believe that the temperature showing is the normal running temp. I'll have to check for software updates etc. Perhaps a different discussion but who / how is the sat nav data updated?

Do you have a Service Book., now that Servicing and Warranty etc is 'on the system',

or just a Cardboard Folder with some print outs for future reference / proof, and maybe an invoice to show what you pay for bits and pieces

& that the tax man gets 20%.

No service book these days.

And I find Oil Temp to be pointless so turned it off.

I know/suspect they frig the water temp gauge to read 90 all the time but that doesn’t worry me.

Keep the oil and water levels high and just drive it.

I don't know. I haven't checked. :blush
