Have a 1.5 TSI Ateca now with its own issues but we won’t go there! Wish I had the Leon back!

 

Ironically I listen to my neighbours 2018 Audi Q3 1.4TFSI start up each morning with exactly the same noise. I’ve been told it’s normal, as per above TPI.

Technical background

 

Flowing noises in the engine oil pump. The flowing noises occur at the oil pressure is built up during the engine start. The flowing noises are particularly pronounced after a long stationary period of the vehicle.

Hi, perhaps the poster of this useful info is no longer active, I'm trying to listen to the video clip but it's marked private. Perhaps I need to be logged in to erwin? In which case, is this a Skoda reference? Does anyone know the equivalent VW ref if so?

A week later.. answering this myself: I've found this on VW erwin, it's the same reference number, I needed to be logged in as an affected vehicle though, so used a 2016 1.4 Golf I think. The sound file sounds the same as others available in this thread.

The 150ps 1.4 TSI (EA211) in my Leon FR sounded terrible on startup! Once running, the wastegate rattled like crazy when in eco mode. I covered about 20,000 miles in a year and a bit, with zero issues (aside from the car turning out to have crash damage, but that#s besides the point).

There doesn't seem to be anyone coming back to these oil pump noise threads to say that the noise has gotten much worse or that other issues have arisen, which I guess should be a comfort. I think the original TPI is almost 9yo now.

Yea my noise has not changed since I bought the Octavia in 2017.

It’s oil pressure/pump related IIRC. The worst car to do it was my 2016 1.4 Leon, but my family members’ 2022 1.0 Ibiza, 1.5 Golf and 1.5 T-Roc, and even my 2020 2.0 vRS all do it to some extent. Only VAG car I’ve never heard do it is our old 2011 A3, but that’s an earlier gen 1.4 TFSI, so doubtless they did things differently. 
 

As others have said, I’ve never heard of anyone having issues from either this, or the annoying 2cyl (CoD) turbo wastegate clip rattle. Both just quirks of TSI engines ;)

Given the TPI then doubtless it is an oil system noise in these cases but there is also a starter motor peculiarity which would make the exact same noise and listening to the videos I am convinced it is the armature shaft over-revving for an instant.

 

With an old school inertia starter as soon as the engine fires the pinion is thrown out of mesh by the helix (unless gummed up) the engine cannot over-rev the starter.

 

With a pre-engaged starter the engine would over-rev the starter in the finite time it takes the driver to release the ignition key or button after hearing the engine fire so the pinion has an internal one way roller ramp sprag clutch to prevent the engine driving the starter motor, if these jam up then the starter motor will make the exact noise heard in the time taken to release the key which disengages the pinion via the solenoid.

 

Modern vehicles detect the engine start via the ECU monitoring the crankshaft sensor, the ECU removes the voltage from the starter motor as soon as the engine fires up, this is an advantage for deaf people or disconnected drivers, as a consequential cost saving the starter motors on these engines do not have the one way clutch, a cost saving and also the removal of a component that can fail in service.

 

There is still a finite time before the ECU can remove the voltage to the starter solenoid but its milliseconds, during that time the engine will over-rev the starter motor and then the commutator shaft will gradually slow down, you can hear this precisely in the decaying pitch of the sound in the videos, also the one of the car on the transporter bed spins much faster because the engine was started with an open throttle and revved up quickly.

 

These noises are simply features of modern vehicles be they from the oil system, the vacuum pump or starter motor.
