Sluggish off the line

Featured Replies

My 2009 2.0tdi 170bhp has become very sluggish at setting off. when setting off the car crawls then gets a sudden jolt of power causing wheel spin, I'm well aware of turbo lag but this seems abnormal. I'm not putting my foot down hard either, just very gingerly. The car responds well when in other gears. Iv'e noticed the economy has dropped too.

I was thinking of changing the front tyres and getting a service soon, Is there anything else that could hamper the acceleration?

As per your other xenon headlight post a scan of the car could generate a fault code which will aid diagnosis.

Any on-dash warnings, EML (Engine Management Light), flashing coil, DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) light etc?

Slow or poor pick-up is likely to be fuel or turbo related. Sticky turbo vanes usually result in the EML.

Where are you having the service done? Ask if they have VCDS or VAG-COM (if not a franchised Skoda main dealer) so that they can properly read the codes for you whilst its in.

I'm guessing the car is predominantly used for short low speed journey's (sorry, never been to Jersey but I've heard there aren't many roads?), the DPF and EGR (Exhaust Gas Re-circulation) valve don't like repeated short journey's, regular higher speeds / loads are needed to keep them clear of carbon and soot deposits. As they coke up the car can become less smooth to drive, but again sooner or later you'll see the EML or the car will drop into limp-home mode.

Also - the variable vanes in the turbo could be gummed up (these help give a linear power delivery)

Ok I will post OBD results later.

I have a feeling its turbo related. Iv'e not long cleared the DPF filter. Could do with blanking the DPF because of I only do short journeys.

What do you mean when you say the DPF has been blanked?

The behaviour you describe sounds like the guide vanes in the turbo are sooted up and sticking a bit before breaking free, hence the sudden return of normal performance. This is something that happens to cars that are driven too gently: the soot accumulates in the turbine housing and the low exhaust flow from gentle driving is not enough to clear it out and down the exhaust.

Alternatively it could be problems with the vacuum system, maybe leaking lines or a failing N75 valve. Proper diagnostics with VCDS or something similar that's capable of reading VAG protocols will tell more. A scan with a generic OBD tool is unlikely to reveal much.

I'd suggest logging MAP (boost) requested vs MAP actual while driving to start with, along with N75 duty cycle, VNT position (if fitted - I can't remember if the turbo on these cars has a position sensor for the VNT actuator).

You can't blank the DPF as that is the exhaust, you can have it removed however this is now illegal, I think you mean  the EGR. If you check you fault codes with a reader you might see turbo over boost which will tell you your vanes in the turbo are jammed

Check the fuse for the headlight washers, a lot of owners pull it out as they consume quite a lot of washer fluid.

They also blow quite a bit if the washer caps freeze to the bumper during the winter.

Some other strange faults, the LED indicators in both door mirrors faulty?

Is the car battery nearly cream crackered ?

I will check the fuse for that. Last time I remember the mirror indicators were working.

I will also give the battery a good charge.

Thanks

Have you modded the car at all? Sometimes causes odd effects. Can remember once I had a racing snail, took of its shell to make it go faster, instead just made it more sluggish.

Boom, boom!

:)
