Scary Blowout !

Featured Replies

Funny thing fate. Well, just 2 days ago I was on this forum chatting about tyres and others commented on what they thought.....

At 1.55pm today on the A595, I was aproaching the last roundabout at Egremont just before where I live when I felt a thud at the back of the car.

It seemed as if i'd driven over a 'high' cats eye and thought, that's strange ?

I entered the roundabout at 30mph and carried on accelerating up to 60mph.

As I left the roundabout and accelerated, the Traction control came on (first time ever) and I didn't even know what happened when it comes on anyway. The engine seemed to cut out and then came back alive again.

Then the car swerved to the left and I managed to slow down quickly (good job nobody was on my left) and I pulled over to find the O/S rear like this...

Stanley blade straight through !

Loks lovely wih the spare on though.

Stanley knife blade? Done an amazing amount of damage - Gone straight through the tyre. Fingers crossed - I've not had a blowout to date (yet)

Edit - Just seen the last bit of text in your post. :D Still, quite amazing still.

The spare is a full speed tyre, don't worry about doing only 50.

I think the reason for the 50 mph limit is that the manufacturer hasn't tested the car throughout its performance 'envelope' with a spare on each corner in turn. So you exceed that speed limit at your own risk - as Skoda and your insurer would say. :(

You would not believe the game that I hae had in getting a new tyre for the car.

Because I live in the middle of nowhere, everyone I phoned gave me the " hmmmm.... 205/45/17 erm .... have to order that one in and it's .... erm ... expensive that one ... you know, being a high performance car .... "

With the supplied BLACKPLASTICSPRINGYTHINGYMAJIG - You know, the one you said doesn't work. They come off easily. :D

Cheers bud.

Blimey.

Fortunately, I've never even had a puncture, let alone a blow out... Counting my lucky stars too!

Was just gonna say - glad you're ok, tribute to you/the car it behaved that well and didnt scream off the road out of control.

Depending on your tyre preferences, check out Shifty's 'for sale' thread, might be worth getting alloy + tyre at the same time and then get the good spare moved over to the one currently with flat.
