Glow Plug Warning Light

Featured Replies

In December the flashing glow plug warning light came on whilst driving, shortly followed by the engine warning light. The car then went into limp mode. I took it to my local garage, & after several attempts, & tests,  said they were 99% certain it was the EGR, which they replaced. All was fine, then a few weeks later the glow plug came on again, this time no loss of power. My Driving Light Bulb then went & a that warning light came up, so I had this replaced, & both warning lights then went off. Last night ,suddenly, the glow plug light came on again and car went into limp mode & I struggled the 10 miles home. I booked it in today for a diagnostics test, but the flipping light hadn't come on so couldn't be tested. I was advised to drop the car in next time the warning flashed. I don't find this very satisfactory, as last night I was on a dual carriage way, drove into the outside lane to let a lorry in at a junction, & my power went suddenly, leaving me doing 30 mph in the fast lane, until I could get past the lorry & pull back into the first lane. Has anyone else had this happen and does anyone know the possible cause. I have not had the emissions work carried out, so not attributable to this. I would be grateful for any advice. Thanks.

engine year and mileage would be good

Sorry, it is a 2012 Octavia Elegance Estate, 1600cc, and has done just under 48,000 miles.

Needs faults reading by someone with VCDS, if a warning light has been on then a fault will have been logged and stored, just needs the right equipment to read it.

Thank you. I took it to Kwikfit. How would I find out who has VCDS, please?

There are details on here somewhere of all members with VCDS who will be happy to scan the car for You, just have to find a local one.

Thank you so much, I will look. I am new to all this.

Have you had the emissions software fix done?

The symptoms you describe are the same as many thousands of people have described.

Skoda will cover all repairs for free and for up to two years from the fix being applied. If you ask you will also be given a hire car while yours is being fixed. (Could take a while as they are very busy). They call it the Trust Building Measures and includes any diagnostics or repairs that you may already have had done at any garage.

Call the Skoda emissions hot line and they will arrange everything with your choice of Skoda dealer.

The number is 03330 037 504

If this is the case the I suggest you sign up to the closed Facebook group The Volkswagan Diesel Customer Forum (Emissions Scandal). This covers owners of cars made by VW, Skoda, Audi and Seat that use the EA189 range of Turbo Diesel engines, including our 1.6 litre engines.

The Facebook group also offers advice on what to do if you have had the software upgrade done without your knowledge (it is optional).

Finally you can check if your vehicle has been done by going to www.skoda.co.uk/owners/dieselinfo and entering your VIN.

Let us know how you get on.

No, I haven't taken it for the emmissions update, I had wondered if doing that might solve the problem, but with what I have read, it seems to cause rather than cure it. Thanks any way.

If it turns out to be an EGR failure then talk to Skoda anyway as others with unfixed cars with EGR failures have had the EGR paid for and a 50% contribution to labour cost. Due to the 5-6 hours work required, Skoda garages charge around £1600 in total.

Limp mode when driving hard can also be caused by a turbo fault, usually a gummed up variable vane mechanism.

Thanks for this information. Glad I didn't take it to the Skoda dealer when it first went wrong, my local garage charged me £480, which I thought was a bit dear. Just goes to show. I will look out the receipt just in case I can reclaim any of it. Hoping to have a VCDS scan in next couple of days.  I am really grateful for all the help I have received on this forum. As a mere woman it can be a bit daunting to dive into what is usually a male dominated area. Thanks once again.

why not try Shark in Mansfield  performance mainly (but at least you can ask )   Telephone: 01623 332233 [email protected].          not much they don' know and are reliable (from my experience)

Thank you, I have just messaged them, along with another company I found.  Very good of you to help.

Thank you cheshire_cat, have just taken car to Shark, they tested it, and gave me a printout, which showed that the problem is the EGR sensor & valve, which I had replaced last month. They didn't even charge me. Great bunch of lads. Have now been back to garage who replaced EGR & they are to contact their supplier. This is a great forum.

:)  keep us posted

The garage has now contacted their supplier, who are to send a replacement. It is to be fixed next Monday, at no cost to me. Thank you all.
