fuel flap won't open

Featured Replies

i'm in my fifties and just bought my first skoda, wish i'd bought one sooner as it's a great wee car...

it's a skoda fabia 1.2 htp 2005,full service history,with 62,000 miles,as said i'm loving this wee car,but...

when i pull the petrol flap release lever,on the floor at the side of drivers seat, nothing happens, the central locking system seems to unlock doors, boot, petrol flap,as i was able to manually with a decent amount of force open the flap, i had to pull firmly but cauciously, force the flap open with my fingers, filled up with fuel, then clicked flap back into place with no issues, flap stays secure

i had a look while the flap was open, and the black release pin is in place, when i push it in,it springs back into place, but when i pull the cable, the pin doesn't move/retract  ?

is it just a case of fitting a new release cable ?

if so,where is the best place to buy one ?

i appreciate any help/advice you more experienced skoda owners could give me on how to deal with the above issue

It's probably the cables become unattached. Fairly common. If you pull down the carpet in the boot on the drivers side you'll see the fuel flap release cable. There's a connector that pushes which has probably come loose.

Plus one on issue.

I may have posted a cable tie fix. Worked for me.

Yep, the cable pops free of the end. I looped a cable tie round the socket, one round the cable end and then looped them together with the third:

The tie round the socket/outer alone would probably be fine if pulled tight enough but this three tie solution hasn't gone again in four years.

today,i went into the boot and checked the cable and it's securely in place as it should be,when i forced open the petrol flap, the black plastic spring loaded locking pin is correctly in place, also i can easily push the locking pin in,let go and it springs back into the locked position,so the pin moves freely and spring loaded as it should

i opened the boot and petrol flap, then watched while my son operated the petrol flap opening lever next to the drivers seat, there was no movement with the petrol flap locking pin as he pulled the lever,i even pushed inward on the cable outer casing in the boot, but there's no movement on the cable,as the cables tight in the socket as it should be

when pulling the flap release lever,i don't feel any tension,as you would when pulling a lever connected to a cable

so my thoughts were...

either, the cable has detatched itself from the black plastic spring loaded flap locking pin...or...the cables nipple on the petrol flap opening lever, has broke off or has jumped out of place...

the lever won't retract the locking pin,so i'm thinking, the cables snapped,or the lever end has somehow disconnected

is there anything other than a broken cable or disconnected cable, that could be causing my issue ?

what do you folks think ?

i was going to take the cable out at the flap locking pin end first,to check the pins still attatched to the cable

which way do i turn the cable/pin at the socket,to unlock and pull out the cable and plastic pin ?

if the pins as it should be,i was going to pull the pin outwards,to see if there's still a nipple on the cable or if the cable is broken and will pull right out of the outer casing

if the cable won't pull out it's outer casing, then the nipple should be still attatched,so therefore my problem will be the nipples jumped out of the lever

does the above sound like a decent plan ?

It's been a while since I did mine but as I recall it didn't need a turn to release - it was just a push fit.

I think you're right - check the ends to make sure inner and outer are firmly attached at both and then look for a break in the cable.

I've never replaced the cable but if you find it's broken my advice would be don't pull it out until you know how you're going to put a new one in - you may need to use the old one to pull the new one through if it's routed through box sections.
