Where can I pick up an ignition live feed in boot area?

Featured Replies

16 Plate Octy with 12v socket at near side in Boot.  This is permanently 'Live' and I want to fit a rear dash cam which only goes live once ignition is switched on.  Thought about rear wiper motor for a feed but then that will presumably only work once wiper is switched on.

Anyone any ideas to save having to run the cable to the fuses, which are a pig to access where one has to remove the glove box etc. to get access to them at the back?

I'm new to the Octavia also but I've had the glove box out a couple of times when I fitted my front dash cam.  It's not really that difficult after you've done it a couple of times and you understand how it all works.  I wired mine into a permanent live as I like to leave my camera running while parked up.  I have a rear one to fit soon which I'll also like to have running while parked.  In my last car, MK3 Focus, there was a fuse panel in the boot which I tapped into for the live feed and ran it through a little switch to turn it off when not needed.  With the Octavia not having a fuse panel in the boot I'm thinking that I'll just plug it into the live 12v socket as I need it and remove when not needed.  For me it'll save a lot of bother wiring up to the front fuse panel.  Only thing I'm not looking forward to now is removing or easing back the plastic trim around the rear window to feed the wiring.  I've had a quick look and it all seems a fairly close fit and the plastic seems fairly hard.  Don't want to snap anything.  I'll probably have a go when the weather warms a bit.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I have already installed the front dashcam via the fuse box behind the glove box, but into a spare socket live once the ignition is switched on.  Unlikely you I do not want a live dashcam in either end of the car. Might be a big drain on the battery.

I've looked at running the camera cable from rear window through to the front fuse box but it looks a real challenge. Along the roof headline is not the answer as there could be issues with airbags nearby.  Hopefully someone may have an answer for an ignition switched feed in the boot area.

Cheers

Can you not change the rear power socket to be only on when the ignition is switched on - on the Golf there is a 2 position fuse powering the power sockets, one position for power all the time and the other for ignition power only.  It is simply a matter of moving the fuse up or down 1/2 a position, I would expect the Octy to be the same but maybe not - worth checking.

Thanks for suggestion.  Good idea and simple .

Where was this switch on the Golf, please? I had a Mk 2 Ockty where the fuse panel was easily accessible on the drivers side panel, but the Mk 3 fuses are all behind the glove box which is a pain to remove.  Why Skoda designed it that way is a mystery.  Don't remember any switchs there on the Mk2.  Maybe another poster could clarify?

Temeperature at freezing levels again so will wait for warmer weather before a possible glove box strip down.

The position mentioned above is visible in the Octavia fuse box or, to put it another way, you can see where it should be - but it isn't.

Is this the fuse box behind the glove box, and I still ther only a blank space where the switch might have been?  Don't want the hassle again of taking out the glovebox to find nothing there.

That's the one; yup - just a space.

Thanks, YMe, for clearing that up. One less frustrating task for no gain.

Cheers
