How can I map a drive if the drive is remote?

Featured Replies

Is it possible to have a drive mapped, showing as a network drive in Windows Explorer, when the drive in question is in a computer in another building at the other end of town?

I use GoToMyPC at the moment, that lets you transfer files, but does not create mapped drive so to speak.

Does any of its competitors have this ability?

Thanks

Martin

You can have a drive mapped any time you have a network connection to the remote machine. You can leave it there when the connection disappears, and it will reconnect next time the link is available. I'm not familiar with GoToMyPC although I have a vague recollection it's web-based, so it wouldn't support such connections.

If it's in another building / other end of town, what kind of link exists between your PC and that one? Is it a private intranet kind of Windows network, or are you using the big bad world wide web ? If the latter, there are multiple ways to do it, and you need to take security into account.

If it's all on your company network, then it's fairly easy to map. You just create a share on the remote PC, then connect to the shared directory as a drive on your local PC

Will be using the www via BT provided Broadband.

Currently I have several PCs on a Peer to Peer network all running XP Pro, one of these is a designated server machine, but is still just XP Pro. I also have netgear router firewall and 24 port switch.

Will be opening a little shop in the town and just need one PC there that can see a drive letter as the other PCs do, but they are in the same building as the server so thats never very complicated.
