Handy App for centrino laptops..

Featured Replies

Its called NHC - Notebook hardware control.. and its really good.

its mainly for monitoring things like CPU usage, temperatures and controlling the fans.

BUT it has some great features.. eg..

HDD SMART control:

Ive got a Hitachi 7K100 7200rpm drive in mine... wonderful bit of kit, really helps performance and ill reccomend them to anyone... anyway, this application can control the power-saving features of the drive, so its always in max performance when its plugged in, whilst activating all the power saving features when on battery.. as well as controlling all the things like the acoustic management.

advanced CPU power profiles - can limit the CPU speed even more when in battery mode.. i can now get 5 hours batt life from my Latitude D610 when just surfin the net or doing light work.

also even better (to extend batt life even more, and reduce cpu temperatures when giving the laptop some use.. ie folding ;) it has voltage control for the cpu.

because the machine changes the voltage depending on the speed + load its running at, the voltage tolerances are quite flexible..

this means that you can under-volt your cpu... so it consumes less power and produces less heat! ive been messing about with it and found my 1.7gig will run at 0.7v @ idle/batt mode (should be 0.98v) and its running fine at 1.1v for full power (instead of 1.3)

this has resulted in a temperature drop of 20c on full load and 10c when in battery mode!!! so therefore the fan never cuts in so even more power saved

Disclaimer: take care with the voltage thing.. if you go too far, you may crash your laptop... it does have built in stability testing...... USE IT

Thanks very much for posting that. My laptop isn't Centrino certified because it uses a 3rd party, non intel wireless chip, but it still worked fine for me on my Toshiba Libretto anyhow. I got the Pentium M Ultra low voltage, and it's currently at 0.812v, pretty impressive
