1.4 DSG - what to look out for?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Since changing to a MK3 vRS 4x4 I've lost touch a bit with the MK2 forums, having had two MK2 diesel vRS's.

Anyway, I'm now on the lookout for a car for my old man, he really needs a DSG/auto at this stage, and doesn't need lots of power.

I'm looking at 1.4 petrol hatch or estates, he doesn't do big miles, and has a budget of about £6k. A Yeti is another possibility, or even a later 1.2 TSI.

What are the known issues to look out for on this engine? Is it the TFSI or TSI version? What are the different power outputs and their differences - i.e. turbo/mapping? Which DSG box, and what svc interval for this?

Thanks in advance!

The 1.4 TSI will not have the same worries as you had with your 1.4 TSI Twincharger,

same DQ200 but will have Mineral Oil so no worries about the World Wide Recall or '34F7',  as after that,

so just the next Service campaign that some need 2013-2015, '34H5' a Software Update.

Otherwise do the usual checks, Service history, any Warranty work done etc.

Is the 1.4 in the MK2 the same basic engine as the Fabia Twincharger (minus the supercharger) or not, and is the MK3 1.4 TSI a different engine altogether, or just revised?

And what did the Elegance spec gain over SE?

Newer 1.4TSI has a belt rather than chain. No issues really. No issues with lower output 1.4 TSI with chain / tensioner either.

Still just be sure on Spark Plugs changed.

What about the cam chain tensioner issue? Is it true that the 1.4 122bhp has a belt, rather than a chain? (I'm surprised if so)

See info here:

Also, does the Rapid use the older 1.4 or the newer TSI with cam belt rather than chain?

Now looking at a 2010 1.4 TSI - is there any way to preempt the cam chain issue, can the chain & tensioner be changed to avoid failure, and is it a big job?

It is a fairly big job to change chain and tensioner, in ££, labour and parts, but the 1.4 does not suffer as badly as the 1.8 and 2.0 Tsi, (love my 1.8Tsi though, fantastic engine apart from the design flaws)

The 1.4Tsi is a jem of an engine and surprised me when i drove one, so long as it has been serviced properly then it shoulden't have any problems
