UK Additional USB Sockets

Featured Replies

I'm starting to look for options to add more USB charging points, to be fair at the moment I probably only need two, which could be catered for by a simple 12v adaptor in the front lighter, but I'd rather hide them away as one of them is potentially for a MiFi (if they can't work out why mine doesn't have the LTE SIM Card slot), it would also be handy to have some USB ports that are accessible to the back seats.

I've spotted that on UK cars there's a 12v socket in an ashtray (Why do they even still fit an ash tray?!) so I could just put a 12v to USB in there, under the front arm rest I've spotted a small cut out where I'm guessing there *could* be a USB socket, similar to the one under the front console?

Does anyone know what's possible with cabling already there please?

Cheers

It's not an ashtray and the manual says it's for storage and must not be used as an ashtray.

On cars sold in the rest of Europe, there's a 230 volt 2 round pin socket and 2  USB points fitted in the rear.  We don't get this as the power socket doesn't comply with UK standards and they don't modify it and fit a UK 3 square pin socket.  I don't know why they can't still give us the USB points though?

Why can't the rest of Europe be like us instead of having to be different? (Said with tongue in cheek, of course!).

Just a FYI - the 220V socket and extra USB ports is an option, not standard :)

You could power the MiFi from the boot 12v socket with a USB adapter but it will always be on.

Why don't you just use a mobile hotspot on your mobile instead? I know having the LTE SIM socket means you could use rSIM profile to use the SIM in the mobile. That's what I'd have ordered and how I'd use it if I was in the car more. But I get 16GB data on my mobile (and use less than 1GB a month) so there is no way I'd want another data contact for another SIM.

Because I have an iPhone. You have to manually toggle the hotspot on and off, I really can't be bothered and probably wouldn't remember.

Using the boot socket is a nice idea but I have a dog who likes to chew little things like that lol

I agree that it's frustrating we can't just have things like this.

A storage unit that looks just like an ashtray LOL

The main question I have is does the cabling for the USB exist, at least if there's 12 or 5v there I've got something to work with, otherwise it means running cables and I don't really want to do that on a brand new car.

The wires won’t be there, if the equipment is’nt.
