1.8T cam chain tensioner....faulty?

Featured Replies

Has anyone replaced the chain tensioner on a 1.8T before?

Mines struggling to start from cold (110,000 ran on Mobil 1 0w40 always - change every 5-6k) - very lumpy for about 10 seconds but then the engine is quiet as a mouse? Always has been really...Fault code p0011 popped up which mentions Cam A.  Hot starts are no problem

Also found plug 1 and 2 in the rocker had oil ingress into the spark plug hole - cleaned this out but made no difference to starting

I do not hear any rattles from the chain either?

Why are you using 0-40 and not 5-30? like Skoda would of used?

Ive always used it (for 10 years), its a compatible oil

I'd try to rule out other things first before thinking about the chain/tensioner.

Has it had any other work done recently? How old is the cambelt tensioner?

Could it be a weak battery possibly along with other issues?

Hi mate, the cambelt/tensioner/damper was done about 3-4 years ago so is almost due.

The battery is new within the last few years (good Bosch Silver one, 5 year warranty job), the engine is turning over fast enough, just feels like the spark/fuel isnt there on a dead cold start.

Before you jump in the deep end on this, is your fuel pump relay showing any signs of heat/shorting?, as that code does not just relate to just the chain tensioner.

@Liverpool-Lad the cam chain tensioner!? The cam chain runs between the intake and exhaust camshafts.

Ive not checked this, the pump does prime as normal though when opening the drivers door and ignition.

Its just stone cold starts which are troublesome, car is spot on when started.  Which one is the FPR?

I changed my chain tensioner, not a huge job but it requires the removal of the inlet camshaft, which isn't driven by the timing belt. You can't change the chain without removing both cams, which means removing the timing belt, so thats something to consider.

Theres a DIY somewhere for it I followed, have to count the links between teeth so you get the cams/chain all set up the same way it came off. Theres also a gasket for the tensioner you'd need to replace.
