How hot do your rear brake discs get?!

Featured Replies

Hi all

As above! I'm trying to figure out if I have slight brake binding on the back of my car. (Octavia Scout estate). Rear discs are almost always warm / hot to the touch after a drive (even just a few miles), even the centres of the wheel hubs are warm. Nothing is glowing red hot or blistering wheels / smelling hot, so if it's binding it's not bad. But I'd like to know if hot rear discs are normal? Front discs are pretty cool to the touch, maybe lukewarm. Rear discs are hotter, and I thought the rear brakes did less work? (Though the discs are also smaller than the front discs so less thermal mass to heat up...) Am I being paranoid? Probably! But the rear discs and pads were replaced recently, so if they're not right I'd like to know so I can take it back to the garage.

Cheers.

Jack the car up and spin the back wheels, it will take you a few minutes and then you will know for sure.

Sounds like sticky calipers as I had the same issues when my calipers were seized.

Thanks chaps.

Jacking it up makes sense. How freely should they spin though? I know on my old car the wheels never spun all that easily even when all was working fine! I'll spin them all and see how they compare.

I had to replace both calipers on the drivers side in November due to rears sticking and the fronts seizing.

New pads and discs all round.

Why does everyone replace sticky callipers these days instead of giving them a service...

Make sure your handbrake cables are fully releasing and there is 1-1.5mm gap between each calliper lever and its stop.
