Headunit issues

Featured Replies

Evening everyone I'm fairly new on here and haven't posted before but would like some help/ideas/experiences. I have 2011 Octavia vrs. I've changed my headunit to a dab Columbus from a zenec nav unit (previous owner had installed). At first it worked fine but now it 'bangs' (which is really loud) through the speakers consistently until it stops itself or is unplugged. Also still continues when car is locked. The plug on the back is fine though clip has broken that holds it in. I'm hoping that someone else has had this issues or knows the solution. I have uploaded a clip (excuse my son in the background). Thanks

I've heard of this before but not had any first hand experience of it I'm afraid.

Have you had the car scanned for fault codes?

Thanks. Did you hear of the outcome.I'Ve done a basic scan with a code reader but that's not shown anything up. I was wondering if it needed to be reprogrammed to the computer

It's possible, but I don't know for sure. Certainly wouldn't be a bad thing to have a look at the coding, but you'll need VCDS for that.

Yeah I know. Thanks. Need to get my hands on one or someone with one.

Also it's unpredictable when it does it which is frustrating

Just a thought as I had a head unit problem recently that was fixed when I put in a new car battery.

It seemed like taking the power off the head unit while changing over batteries, as with other computer controlled things, caused it to reset. Works fine now.

Try taking out the fuses supplying the head unit in order to force a cold restart.

Should be two fuses, one permanent supply and one switched supply.

There's no switched supply to the unit. There's two permanent supplies, and the CAN system tells the unit when to power on and off.

Thanks pikpilot. I've recently checked the voltage output of the battery which was fine. I'll check the fuses anyway thanks. I think it's electrical/system as it starts to make the noise as soon as the driver door opens. No ignition or power as such needed.

Yes that is the point I was making. It is instructed to shut off, turn on, run and make other changes via the CAN bus but these have to be decoded  and stored correctly by the "computer" in the head unit. These can get screwed up and a reset by removing the supply power will give the unit the cold start reset.
