Durable Sealant/Wax

Featured Replies

I have a new car & would like to get it ceramic coated but I'm not going to be able to get that done for a few months or so. What can I do in the meantime to protect the paint? I've never used a wax or sealant on anything before so it's a bit new to me, any pointers?

Cheers

For products you can nip down to your local Halfords;

Sealant

I recently used Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection for the first time, and I'm really impressed with it. Very easy to apply, and appears quite durable.

Wax

I haven't used this, but Autoglym High Definition gets very good reviews.

The wax I do use is Bilt Hamber Double Speed Wax. Excellent piece of kit, easy to apply, and durable.

Not sure what your car wash routine is or your experience, but to minimise swirls and scratches use the Two Bucket Method with Grit Guards, microfiber or lambs wool wash mitts, and enjoy. You would still use this setup/routine even when the ceramic coating is applied.

If you're unsure of anything try  detailingworld.co.uk.

I'm in the process of purchasing a Bilt Hambler Clay bar, as Skoda Dealer gave me 2 Autoglym gift boxes, including Shampoo/Conditioner, Polish, and Extra Gloss Protection.

I'm going to save it for the new Superb mk3 though.

Recently converted to Fusso 99 based on recommendations on here. Can't yet comment on durability (It's only been on the car a fortnight) but I'm told the 2 coats I gave it will give me 6 months plus of protection. Topped it off with Megs Ultimate spray wax - gives the car a really sharp look.

One thing to think about (I learned about it on here) - Fusso (and similar polymer sealants) will only work properly if applied directly to the clear coat, so you would need to strip the dealer-supplied protection before you start, to get the best results. If you are just looking to add to the existing protection, a wax would do you better. If you decide to seal it, a top tip for the Fusso is to put it on extremely thinly and take it off before it has chance to dry.

I use both autoglym hd wax and fusso cost and will recommend both of them fusso is very durable if applied and cared for correctly, hd wax is a good all rounder with amazing gloss enhancing properties

Have a look at Infinity Wax as well.

You can spend a fortune. I've personally settled on Collinite 476. Used it for years and it easily lasts 6 months.

I do my car waxing twice a year, Spring and Autumn in this order.

1)  Iron fall out decon

2) wash

3) clay (I use a clay bar. Tried the mitt but after seeing how much a clay bar picks up after using the mitt, I don't think mitts do enough)

4) rinse off

5 ) polish. I use megs finishing polish by hand. My old arthritic hands don't like a machine these days!

6) 2 coats Collinite 476 s, leaving 24 hours between coats

7) lastly for real bling 2 coats of DoDo Juice Acrylic spritz.

Okay it sounds a lot of trouble but I thoroughly enjoy sprucing up my car.

I use Autoglym High Definition wax too. I’ve been pretty impressed with it, very nearly deep shine and lasts pretty well too. As others have said it’s the preparation of the paintwork that makes the difference so wash, rinse, clay, polish and wax. Don’t forget to treat the wheels whilst you’re at it.

dodo juice supernatural is excellent wax, pricey but lasts for 3-4 months. I have two type 2 vans and a beetle to wax and im on the same pot from 5 years ago, I've just tried carPro fixer to get rid of the swirls and was very impressed, G technic C2V3 , an excellent sealer (next best thing to a ceramic coat) and gives an amazing shine on its own, then i've used two coats of supernatural to make it pop.
