Ignition key can be removed out of Park

Featured Replies

Good morning.

Totally by accident yesterday I noticed that I could removed the ignition key from my DSG equipped Fabia when it was in neutral. As I understand it, that should only happen when in Park. It's not really a major issue to me but I do like to have things working as they should. Most of my previous vehicles would only allow key removal when in park.

Any ideas why anyone?

That is how it is and should be.

You can park and leave the car in neutral and apply the parking brake, and remove the key.

You can start the car with the DSG in neutral except when the ambient temp is below a certain temp.

Never had DSG but ordinary auto's will allow this! I would have thought removing the key as long as the engine was turned off, is not an issue. Trying to re-start an auto in gear, however should result in the isolator preventing the car from igniting!

Actually there are ones that will not allow you to remove the key if it is in D, S or R only in P or N.

Yeah, I can see that happens if the engine is on... If you switch off the engine, then apply the gear, will the key still not remove?

My Yaris will not allow the gear lever to be moved without the key, unless you press an additional button etc. You have to apply the footbrake too, when started, to take it out of park. Fairly common anti drive off safety features!

Thanks for the replies guys. I checked the handbook & it definitely says that the key should only be removable when the gear lever is in Park so something isn't right somewhere. To be honest it's not a problem to me but I have a 12 month warranty on the vehicle so I might as well try to get it sorted while I can & hopefully it won't cost me anything.

Something is wrong with the handbook.   Like needing to not have the front wheels locked if working on the car.  Hand brake on but key out the ignition..    Safety might recommend always only remove the key when in park,  but that is not required,  and as I said the car can be started in N,  almost all the time.
