Main Beam only works on 'flash' mode

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm a newbie to this site ... but not to Skodas ...  9 years on, we're now on our second Fabia. This one's a 63 reg 1.2 TSI Estate.

Having a main beam issue;  they both work on 'pull' (flash) mode, but neither work on 'push' mode. Blue icon in speedo panel only comes on whenever the main beams do come on, ie not when in 'push' mode ... or when the ignition is initially turned on, when all the other icons light up.

The headlamp unit has 3 bulbs ...small sidelight, fisheye dipped beam and a single element (H4?) main bulb ... all behind clear glass.

Relay/fuse problem?

Usefully, the fuses are all unmarked and the Haynes manual electrics schematics don't help much.

Also, the driver's side electric windows switches don't work intermittently. Seem to not work mostly when the lights are on.

Any ideas gratefully received?

Ta.

@wilf3570 - Well, an H4 bulb has 2 elements, one for dip and one for main beam. So a single element bulb isn't an H4. And the fuses and bulbs are all good.

It could possibly be the actual light switch. They have been known to fail. If still in warranty, its worth getting checked as they are around £70 from a main dealer.

Way out of warranty I guess, but I may take the thing apart and check it out. Thank you.

i had no idea that was even possible. My one only flashes just the middle one not the main beams. My main beams are HID and never flash.

@mrgf @wilf3570 - Which has reminded me of something; i had a similar issue but lost the dip rather than main beam, and the failure was in the dip switch. It might be worth squirting some electrical contact cleaner in there and see if that gets them back.

I'll give the squirt method a go ... it's definitely the cheapest and least time consuming idea. I'll let you know. Ta.

Take care... I squirted cleaner in the electronic boot pop once as I felt it needed a clean and lube, like most locks etc. Almost immediately, the pop started to go wrong. It would fire off like a machine gun and take a few "Pops" to open. I asked main dealer and they said, yeah, they do that! Had to replace it!  £25 and an hour fiddling about!

Well, in my case the dip switch actually was FUBAR. On that basis there's probably nothing to lose here.
