garage door sealing

Featured Replies

after the winter i got a major request from my co-pilot to get that b****y door sealed off soon!!

the rear of our garage is also our laundry space

it is really cold going out there to sort out some washing and such...and even doing a spot of work

the top seems to be well designed and no gap and there are plastic wind seals above and below the pivot points so i think the threshold is the place to fit a seal...i see what looks like a water bar on some sites but rain doesnt come in as there is a step in the concrete in that area...but wind can get under there...the step is about 25mm

the door itself is fairly level at the bottom..

any advice greatfully received so i dont get the wrong type of seal...

thanks in advance

There must be some form of garage door strip like you get on domestic front doors. You know the ones with the brush-like strip. Perhaps a slightly thicker brush or a rubber strip that seals when shut but doesn't impede on the functionality of the door opening mechanism. (look who's swallowed a thesaurus)!

Toolstation have this one, search their website, part number 23839

Screwfix have similar. Other sites, such as Wikes, B&Q will most likely carry a version. They also have on eBay, solid rubber strips, like mini speed bumps, you stick to the floor, so the garage door shuts flush to them, forming a seal. You drive over them, hence solid rubber. They need the glue too, to fix down but most likely perform the best overall. The first types fix to the lower edge of the doors by self tapping screws and lift/lower with the door.

I have not looked extensively but the ones I have seen are aluminium, where if you get the idea, hunt around a bit, I am sure you will find a matching white variant. If not, you could paint it!

i have a toolstation near me...who doesnt...i think your idea of the brush will be more adjustable to any slope in the door base...and i think will be easy to fix with screws...

the more i looked at the door i can see some seals on the sides..

i think if i eliminate as much daylight as possible it will cut down on draughts

cheers

thanks

the second one seems to be ideal and i think i can use both the top and bottom designs...

any cut out of gaps is what i am after as rain doesnt get in just now...just the beast from the east...the garage faces east

as it happens... and the bottom of the door isnt parallel with the concrete threshold...enough to be seen

as for fixing...i will need to buy a suitable drill bit to get into the metal...as my set is fairly basic for wood/plastic/aluminium mainly

and a some self tappers too as suggested above....

cheers
