Another Scout Lights Question

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have had the Scout now for getting on for 3 months now and love it.

I have always left the lights on "automatic" but noticed that, even in brilliant sunshine, my lights were on as  I could see them reflected in cars ahead of me in traffic.

Hence I decided to turn the switch to the "off" position but, with the engine running I cannot seem to turn the lights off completely!

Is this right?

Cheers,

John

Is it the headlights or day running lights?

Only dim ones, not headlights, so maybe as you suggest.

However in bright sunshine they aren't needed so can I turn them off somehow or am I forced to drive with some lights on all the time?

Surely, in these days of energy-saving, this is a bit odd!

Cheers,

John

I would personally keep them on but you might be able to turn them off via the infotainment. I can with my 245.

You can’t turn off the DRL - Daytime Running Lights, in the Car.

There may be a coding tweak but the only ones I can remember are to put Rear lights on with DRLs.

DRLs were introduced as mandatory in the EU from 2011 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daytime_running_lamp

You can turn them off. It’s in one of the settings menus. Why you’d want to though? Dunno. Can’t really see why people get so worked up about it. Sitting there in traffic, working up a sweat that the lights are on. So what..?

I’m not too sure about this particular car but there is a VCDS option to enable the ability to turn DRL’s on or off in the infotainment. It wasn’t initially programmed in one of my cars and can’t remember in the other.

Clarification.

I wouldn’t recommend turning the DRL’s off. If you are ever involved in an accident you don’t need the hassle from your insurance company for disabling a mandatorily fitted safety component. Also the Auto lights are designed to come on in very bright sunlight, it’s something to do with bright sun making it hard to see if a car is moving or not so the headlights come on as a help for other motorists. I believe it’s common in Nordic countries.

I seem to remember reading a distant thread whereby the headlights do come when switch is in auto in bright sunshine, the thinking behind it was thatit is to aid you been seen by other vehicles that are

possibley being dazzled by said sunshine.

Many thanks everybody!

I think I'll just switch back to automatic and leave well alone.

Just seemed odd to me as I only ever remember Volvos having their lights on constantly which I thought was because it was a Scandinavian thing and they hadn't bothered to change it for the British market! Lol

Have a great weekend!

Cheers,

John

Volvo’s have done this for years, my C30 had the lights constantly running, even in the off position but I used to leave them in the on position as the power was sent through at 60% in daytime mode to prolong the life of the bulbs, but when I fitted Osram xenon bulbs to my factory xenon lights, they blew within weeks as they didn’t like not being run at full power. I went back to Volvo bulbs and left them in ‘On’ with no trouble. On a Volvo, you cannot disable the lights yourself, even if you have a copy of VIDA (which I still do as I haven’t sold it) as it needs to be a live copy connected to Volvo in Sweden and most dealers will refuse to do it for you. They have followed the UK market with the current range of cars with the more contemporary DRL’s and Auto lights.

Volvo's are proper cars though. I miss mine, no matter how good the Skoda is (I realise this is completely off topic...). For one thing their DRLS recognize that people BEHIND need to see you too! You're right about the bulbs though. Volvo bulbs - 3 years Anything else - 9 months and they're were virtually impossible to change on a FL S60

That can be changed on the Octavia using OBDEleven or VCDS.

Yeah, but I don’t have either and I’m too scared of breaking my (wife’s) brand new car! Else I’d do the auto dip headlights and traffic signs too!

Both OBDEleven and VCDS save the old values so if you make a mess you can revert back.
