Screeching sound in 2nd and 3rd gear only

Featured Replies

 Hi,

Sometimes I notice a screeching noise when I give the car some throttle. It almost sound like a screeching fan belt or something.

The sound does not appear when I drive "normal", and it always happen in 2nd and 3rd gear. The sound dissapear when the gearbox change from 2nd to 3rd, and reappear in 3rd, but dissappear in 4th.

I have never heard the sound in 1st, 4th 5h or 6th gear.

I noticed it some days ago, and it suddenly appeared. The noise has not gradually got higher.

The first I think of is a bearing in the gearbox, but then I think the sound always would have been present in 2nd and 3rd gear or something.

Next I think of the turbo, and the bearing there, but then I again I think it would be more permanent. Also the noise does not ever appear in the other gears, even at kickdown.

The oil has been changed on the gearbox evey 60k, last time 23k ago.

Also engine oil is changed every 15k km.

Flywheel changed about 100k ago.

The car has done 354k (original turbo and DPF)

Update:

The sound went away for a while, but now, the shrieking noise is a lot louder. It's almost the same sound as a slipping fan belt.

I am pretty sure it is the turbo, or could it be exhaust/boost leaks maybe?

On the Mk1 Octavia it is the first symptom of a failed one-way-clutch in the alternator pulley. It will ruin the bent tensioner and belt.

I assume it is the same in the Mk 2. Get the alternator pulley checked out and if found to be faulty, you must replace the belt tensioner too.

I also suspected the pulley, so I removed the belt completly to rule out any pulleys or the belt but the noise is still present.

Today the car ran DPF regen and the noise dissappeared. When the regen ended, the noise reappeared S-)
