Petrol Emissions v Diesel Emissions

Featured Replies

& the best place to get real world actual results for your car is on the EQUA website here:-

Basically click on the coloured squares on the main web page for cars listed by that pollutant/mpg etc...

Is a new Qashqai really that bad?.

Let us hope the 1.6 litre get dropped as the have a 1.5 litre version which can take its place and if people want diesel, for now, and there is the excellent 1.2 petrol that give similar performance and not much worse fuel consumption in the real world.

Looks like Nissan will follow other Japanese companies and stop producing any diesel if not this year then by 2020 when lots of EVs and petrol hybrid will be in the range to replace the diesels.

Not sure any official lists have been produced for Skoda yet.

There were some initial tests (this link is an environment group summary)

https://unearthed.greenpeace.org/2018/03/02/depth-carmakers-performed-first-wave-real-world-tests/

Audi has provided some details (obviously has some same engines), so this might help

https://www.audi.co.uk/about-audi/wltp/wltp-tested-models.html

Goes to show how truly awful many of these diesel engines still are and mos smart buyers are staying well clear of these diesel which could well be banned form entering cities in a year or so and only the next generation of diesels, as well as the petrols and EVs, be allowed in to busy urban areas.

Looking at the air quality figures on the EQUA list my Euro5 1.6 diesel is C. the Renault 1.2 euro 6 petrol is also C., so no cleaner.

Are not the Skoda 1.6D figures generally quite poor ie H to C where as the Renault petrol are C to A and this letter scale is pretty rubbish as it does not give actual figures ie you could have just squeezing in to the C, and still be right on the 80 mgm/km NOX and the petrol car flying through the NOX test but failing to meet the B rating for other testing reasons (ambient temp/pressure/car condition).

The 1.5 conformity factor is of course very interesting  ie is a car actually producing 200 mgm/km of NOX so we need much better clarity what cars are at 60 (the petrol car limit, 80 ,the  diesel car limit and now 200 mgm/km as a new temporary standard and a new lower limit for real world compared to lab test NOX.    Cities and Towns are going looking needing to applying the 60 mg/km for Real world test to clean up their air if not total ban all but essential travel (emergency andf those willing to pay the £20 a day) by Internal Combustion Engines in times of poor air quality.

^^^ Allowing polluters to pay more makes no difference to reducing pollution, it is just the same as those that have vehicles that use more fuel paying for more fuel.

Carbon trading was a con that Governments came up with, allowing polluting vehicles to be on the road is just much the same,

talk about reducing pollution but do not really do anything that will affect too many people any time soon, or actually reduce pollution.

Sadly one measure being muted.  I am not a fan of any measure which allows the rich to pollute, they can just go by a Tesla or similar for their city journeys but if separately collected and put in to anti-pollution measures ie pedestrianization and other such clean air  strategys ie buying Electric, Hydrogen etc buses then the affect can be good.  Hell, make it £30, 40, £50 a day.

Nothing to do with being rich.

It allows anyone to pollute even White Van Man / Woman , trades people scrapping a living but the customers have to pay, or Bus Companies, Local Authorities.

Plenty are allowed to pollute regardless of personnel wealth or income.

Company & Private drivers are still using Chelsea Tractors in Urban Areas regardless of the need for them to tow anything ever.

So Volvo will cease selling diesel engine cars not because they are dirty but because they have become too complex and costly to continue with.

Amen.

This is a great idea for 9 streets in London at rush hour.

Probably coming to an area near you soon.   So no mater if a Petrol or a Diesel.   As for some Hybrids, those will still be a p!55 take as some will be running liquid fuel still.

It doesn't NEED to be a hybrid, the signs say it has to be a ULEV - any vehicle with CO2 emissions under 75g/km is classed as a ULEV according to

Quote

So in theory if a manufacturer could economically make & sell a petrol/diesel car with less than 75g/km it would class as a ULEV and be able to drive on those roads.

That’s until the rules are changed AGAIN because the government don’t have  clue ,it wasn’t that long ago that diesel was the way to go with scrappage of petrol and incentives to change, whatever next?

Reducing CO2 as a priority ended up with increased NOx emissions.   Either way, battery is already a realistic solution for city mobility and avoids the reality of hybrid servicing costs.

Looking forward to trying a BMW i3S next week. I have driven a i3 range extender before and liked it lots, but then it costs lots.

Not a problem seemingly for Police Scotland as they procure more of them....

So are blisters or bunions.

Seems like BMW are actively trying to put you off buying them.

Not putting off those that are buying or leasing them though.

Just as well there are choices in what you can buy or lease or everyone would be driving things that look the same.

Current weirdest looking vehicle IMO is a Hyundai Kona, but i an seeing plenty around now.

Mostly in that Orange that was chosen so that they get noticed easily and some will like the look of and speak or post about, and some will gag at and still speak about.
