Coil pack question

Featured Replies

Just thought I would grab some opinions on this one. I am taking my 2010 Octy vrs petrol for a remap and exhaust next week. I have read about people experiencing coil pack failures post map. I had my coil packs and spark plugs replaced mid last year after one pack failed. Would it still be worth going for a set of r8 coil packs before I go in for the map?

Thanks in advance

I bought and fitted new Bosch coil packs and spark plugs middle of last year. I happened to get a stage one Shark remap later that year and the coils and plugs work perfectly well with it. I would have thought the new coil packs you have already bought will be more than okay. Unless you really do want the nice pretty red ones of course. I think the R8 ones are mainly bought for their looks, but for most of our cars they are hidden underneath the plastic engine cover anyway! The coil pack failures are probably down to those owners still running their original coils, where when put under more pressure, fail due to old age. I know that feeling!!

Lol! Yeah I am definitely at the stage of age related failures. The car seems to be ok tho touch wood. Really looking forward to mapping it. So the r8 coils are just for show then? I was wrongly under the impression they would perform better. Think I’ll stick with the ones I have got for the time being in that case. My engine cover is intact so wouldn’t see them anyway so I wasn’t worried about the fancy colour

I'm in the same zone, where things are getting on a bit now so I try to replace tired components as I go along.  I had the car remapped 18 months ago and had a coil pack or two start to give way under extra load.  After fitting a set of the R8 coil packs, things have been absolutely fine since.  I did some research and bought them from a reliability perspective and the fact that they were red had nothing to do with my decision.

I have no way of knowing if a set of OEM spec coil packs would have performed just as well but some people run them on remapped cars without any issues.

In the past I have read loads of forum posts and test reviews on these R8 coils and nobody so far has proved they are any better than standard ones. At one time I was thinking about buying them myself. Have fun when you get that remap, it is certainly a lot more responsive a car with it. Once you start modding, you will find it hard to stop. Just don't tell your other half exactly how much you end up spending!!

If there was anything difinitove which showed the R8 packs to be better performing than the own ones I would go for it but just can’t seem to find anything. My engine cover is in place and staying that way so not fussed either way on the fancy red finish

Your reply just popped up as I was typing my last. I got my mk2 last year and having previously owned a mk1 which was up at stage 3 I had planned on keeping this one standard. Then a couple of weeks ago the standard exhaust started blowing and has a nasty hole so I took it as a sign lol! Now booked in for exhaust, dv+ and map with more to follow
