Knocking Noise?

Featured Replies

Yet another knocking noise problem:  I have an 2014 Octavia 1.6 TDI.  I changed the front pads two days ago and all was fine on the test drive - this was a drama in itself as the pads supplied by Buycarparts.co.uk were the wrong type and I had to get a Padgit set from EuroCarParts, however I am pretty sure I have fitted them correctly and the calipers went back on okay.

After driving around town for a while today, an intermittent knocking noise has started.  It is not constant but sounds rotational - gets faster as speed increases.  I hope to go out later with my wife driving whilst I try to isolate where it is coming from but, whilst I was driving, it sounds like the noise is coming from the rear. The brake pad change could just be a coincidence...

Any ideas?

TIA.

Just to add a bit more to this having had another look:  on looking at the front discs, there is a thin rust circle on the inside of the front discs (close in to the centre, corresponding to the inner edge of the brake pad - see photo).  It looks like the pad is too thick and thus rubbing on the disc - not sure how this would cause an intermittent noise unless the disc is warped?

The original pads that I removed were Ferodo VW4454 - thickness: 17.4mm, length: 146mm and width 57mm.   The Pagid ones that are now fitted are T2438 - thickness: 17.2, length: 146.25 and height: 62.3mm.  Is the fact that the Pagid ones are wider the cause of the problem?

The pad looks like it is sitting at an angle and not mounted in anything- it just looks wrong in that photograph.

Pads are meant to rub on the discs.:wondering:

Gregoir: you're right, looking at that. Thanks.

They were parallel to the disc when I fitted them - I wonder what has happened.  I'll be taking them off tomorrow.

I took the pads off - they were mounted correctly but the photo doesn't show that the pad face was in contact with the disc and it is the wear indicator/shoulder that makes it look weird.  However the pad is too thick, hence rubbing on the disc,  as well as too wide and rubbing on the hub.

I have put the old pads back on - they still have a fair bit of wear left - whilst I source the correct size (anyone know? I will put this as a separate thread).
