Service query

Featured Replies

My PCH on my VRS is due to end on the last day of July this year. It's on variable servicing of 2 years or 20000 miles - I've done just under 12000 so far so won't reach the 20000 by the end of July.

I had a message appear last year advising oil service but was advised to ignore this or take it to the dealer I got it from to have it taken off. I've just left it as the dealer is quite a way away & I've not been up that way since.

I've just had a message appear advising inspection service but I'm planning to hand the car back in July before the 2 years is up.

I have a Karoq ready to pick up from Alex Lawrie when I've made my last payment on the 1st July for the VRS.

I've rang the dealer (Simpson's Preston) & they advised the service should be done if the message has appeared & then rang Skoda finance who said the same & that they would not take the car back with any service messages visible.

I was trying to avoid paying for the service before handing back but sounds like this won't be possible.

Any thoughts or similar experiences?

Yeah if the car is requesting an inspection service you’ll need to get it done. The advice is correct.

A variable service is 2 years or up to 20,000 miles, the important bit being in bold.

The car is able to monitor driving style, number of cold starts, oil quality etc. and determine for itself when it requires a service.

In this case, and most others, the car will call for a service well before 20,000 miles.

The likely reason your car called for an oil service last year was because you aren't on variable, it sounds like the car was set to fixed intervals (10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever is reached first).

Sounds to me like the supplying dealer screwed up on two occasions:

1) Setting a lease car to fixed instead of variable (a common underhand trick in an effort to get the car in for servicing more often). You should be offered the choice.

2) Telling you to ignore the oil service warning at 12 months. Probably realising their mistake and attempting to get rid of you.

You will need to get the car serviced before it is returned.

In my service book the code indicates it's on variable servicing. So if it asked for an oil service last year would the dealer have set it to a fixed service when its actually preset  in the factory to variable servicing?

.

Many dealers of VW products do just that - they change the factory default from 'variable' to fixed. Same happened with my SEAT yet my previous VW's and this Skoda are variable.

Who advised you to ignore the message?  Not sure if ignoring the message now means the oil degregation and other sensors will be out of sync. Even under variable conditions, the sensors may have determined a service / oil change was required and you've ignored it.

Sounds like you may have been lucky because worse case senario, Skoda could invalidate warranty for ignoring messages.

Twas the dealer who advised to ignore it. It was the same with the wife's Fabia - she had the oil service message after 1 year & when she rang up they asked her to bring the car in & then removed the message - this was Alex Lawrie.

I got mine from Simpson's Preston & was told to ignore &/or come in & have the message removed by them cos it's on a variable service.

I didn't realise the car would tell me if it needs some sort of service - I thought it was preset so it needs just a service at 2 years or 20000 miles whichever is soonest.

This is the way the salesmen explained it - do they know the correct routine themselves?

As mentioned, all cars leave the factory set to variable. The dealers then change them to fixed during the PDI.

This is fine, as long as they ask. To do it to a lease car (where the primary objective of the driver is to minimise servicing costs) is poor.

I've lost count of the amount of the times dealers have misquoted servicing regimes. They should spend more time on here, they might learn something :D

I was in a similar situation, hoping to get away with not having the service done before handing it back - I DID get it done (£219) but was told that if I hadn't, I would have received a bill for it anyway ! Can't complain, just one service (combined oil service & inspection) in almost 2 years is good value IMO.
