Scout and other 4x4 models - hesitation when pulling away?

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have a scout with the haldex 4x4, generation 4. When I pull away from a junction or whatever with a lot of steering lock on, the car seems to hesitate or catch as I pull away. Does anyone else get this? Not sure if it's the 4x4 engaging, or even the turbo spinning up, or if there's a problem somewhere.

I had the haldex fluid and filter replaced, and it helped a bit, but not as much as I was hoping. Any thoughts on what else it could be, if it's not normal?

Thanks.

No one? Or everyone?!

Try doing the same with the TC off (ASR off). see if it is that cutting power.

I only notice this happens at one specific location;

A long sweeping S-bend leaving the motorway going  from left to right leading up to a T-junction. The road I'm joining is 50mph, dips down and away to my left around a bend, and disappears around a bend to my right.

Due to this, I normally position myself to the left - even though I'm going right - to give myself the best view of traffic coming from either direction. I floor it to get up to speed and create as much distance from any traffic I cannot see approaching from around either bend.

In that situation I can feel a slight scrabble and loss of traction when applying sudden power.

Due to the layout and there being a number of accidents there, I now go a different route, so cannot comment if it still occurs.

In case it helps:

Car is approaching 8yo and 100k miles. Tyres are Goodyear Efficient Grip (approximately 4yo & 4mm of tread) and Haldex oil change is due in December - 3 years since last service.

Good thought re traction control, I've had it off to test the 4x4, but not to check the "catching". Will test it.

The wheels don't seem to Scrabble, just the car hesitates, as though the transmission or drivetrain is absorbing the power for a heartbeat or two.

On my old A4 Quattro if you pulled out of a junction on full lock you could feel hesitation and the car vibrate - that's due to it being a 50/50 split on the 4wd (it was a 1.8t).  All 4 wheels drive at the same rate, but the rear wheel of the side /direction you are turning will drag slightly as they can obviously only go in a straight line.....that wheel does less of a revolution compared to the opposite rear wheel - this is the source of the vibration/hesitation -  Hard to explain but watch a lorry trailers wheels go around a tight corner!

Whilst the split is different on the haldex I have experienced the same a few times on my Scout.

Glad it's not just me.

With TCS off, it does it less- though still noticeable. I suppose traction control is fighting the haldex or something. I suppose it's normal then and I'll just ignore it. Might change the diff oil at some point...

Cheers all.
