1.6 tdi cr bottom end rattle?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

ive only had my Octy a couple of weeks and noticed that sometimes (more when cold start) there seems to be a little rattle sound that is more audible from under the engine. Is this a normal operation sound or is it something to get looked at ASAP? Only asking as the garage gave 3 months warranty so if needs anything doing then they will sort it hopefully.

heres a link to video i tried to take, can hear it at the start more clearly and a bit towards the end.

cheers for any help.

@chaymus, please update once you find it.

Just an idea, vacuum/oil pump can make similar noises when it's cold. Once temperature reaches 80 degress it disappears.

There was also an issue with rattle from the fuel lines that some people reported.

If it dissapears when its warm then its probably nothing serious, however, if you have a warrenty I would take it back to the garage & ask them to take a look.

It could be something simple like a plastic clip or screw missing when allows something to vibrate a bit more than normal.

At least then you have the complain logged for the future in case it develops into something worse.

Just a quick update, I've now noticed that the rattle sound is only heard when the clutch pedal is up and car is stationary. When I put the pedal down the noise pretty much goes away completely. Obviously this would make is clutch related? Any thoughts and how serious an issue could it be as I've got a 250 mile drive tomorrow  The car does change gear fine and drive fine in general

Sound like it could be worn dual mass fly wheel and may need replacing soon.

Based on some digging around other sites it seems most likely to be input shaft bearings are worn. The symptoms noted are almost identical to mine so seems likely. Will have to get back to the garage asap then but won't be for another week yet
