Blocked rear screen wash pipe

Featured Replies

Hello.

I have had and put up with this problem for 14 years since it occured the day after I bought the vehicle, today I had to repair the seized washer pump so had no choice but to struggle with the awfull access to the reservoir and pump, while doing so I was once again on a mission to cure the nagging fault and once again failed

Its a bit déjà vu as I probably came to the same conclusion that I did back then and maybe one or more occasions since, my memory being poor.

Today after repairing and testing the pump I could see that operating the rear screen wash would cause the pipe to blow off the pump outlet, blowing and sucking on the pipe it seems blocked and will hold a vacuum against my tongue although that might be the action of a  non return valve.

At the other end I found I had left the pipe disconnected from the jet in the high level brake light, blowing and sucking on this indictates an open pipe somewhere or another, possibly another quick release junction blown apart but I cant reconcile why one end of the circuit seems sealed and blocked and the other open to atmosphere.

The tube seems to go into the wiring loom just after the pump connection and I cant trace its route to the other end.

Does anyone know any likely blockage or pinch points as well as any connections along the way that may have blown off?

Many thanks from a patient man on a mission!

@J.R. - The obvious place to look is the joint in the LH rear wing (under the CD stacker if fitted).

Thanks for the speedy response, that is an area that I have often fiddled in with the CD player being temperamental, it may even be be that I caused the problem doing so all those years ago.

Off to have a look now!

Hey Ken.

If you are like me and enjoy helping others with your knowledge then you can bask in a warm glow this evening, problem not cured yet but well on the way thanks to you!

Removed CD changer and found the coupling apart, feed to the pump had been wrapped with gaffer tape to try and stop leaking when rear washer operated, pretty sure it was not me, tape removed and forward pipe is blocked, can suck and blow both ends with same result, vacuum against tongue. Rear pipe to washer jet is clear.

I inserted some fine draw wire like a catheter and it goes forward 1.5m before encountering an obstruction, I will try the same from the pump end tomorrow and also blwing through with compressed air.

Would you know what path the loom takes and where it would be 1.5m forward of the CD player, through the door sill maybe, anywhere it may have become squashed?

It might just be that the old fluid has dried to a powder and plugged the pipe at the lowest point.

Thanks again, what a great resource this forum is!

The washer tube running through the loom seems to be completely blocked, I can apply 120psi air pressure to both ends and it remains completely blocked.

So unless anyone can suggest where it could be pinched flat or a valve or something between the pump and the coupling under the CD player it looks like I will be withot rear screen wipers for another 14 years!!!

Thanks for your help KenONeill

i think that there may be a one way valve in the boot but not sure from memory
