Hesitation, Black smoke

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have (56) 2.0Tdi dpf delete. High milage 190k

As title reads I am getting hesitation on acceleration sometimes followed by black smoke if I keep my foot down. If I back off nothing. Doesn't do it all the time. I swear it mostly when the weather is warm and after going round corners and changing down gears. Sometimes Ill go a whole journey without it happening once.

Ive checked a few little bits. Air filter looks ok, was new 3 months ago. Removed ASV and EGR to clean.

Intercooler pipe on drivers side had come out slightly so reseated that in position. Fuel filter has a slight weep but have a new one coming and will fit that with new filter and seal.

Ive ran a fuel system cleaner in the last tank but problems began before this.

Any ideas? Turbo going?

Cheers

Just in case have you checked the oil level is not past full?

The oil level looks fine.

Out of interest how would that cause my symptoms?

I had another problem free morning but I know it will happen on my drive home from work.

Thanks

Too high oil level in the sump can lead to several problems:

- excess oil getting up into the cylinders causing smoke as it gets burned off during combustion

- excess back pressure in the sump which can lead to misfiring or a knocking noise or rattle from the motor.

- excess sump pressure also puts additional strain on oil seals which can lead to oil leaks or seal failures.

Regards Mike

I'd check the intercooler pipes again. If these arent in correctly or have a split you will loose all bost power and get black smoke. The lugs on the pipes that hold them in can wear and allow them to slip out.

I checked the intercooler pipe again and it had come out. The lug on the side had worn down too much and the o ring had split. Got a new one and clip from tps and put that on.

I think its unrelated but the issue is getting worse now. The smoke is sometimes grey and nearly everytime I accelerate the engine bogs down. I can drive it without it smoking if Im very careful on the accelerator pedal.

Thanks

Get your vacuum system inspected for leaks. If there is a leak the the turbo actuator won't operate the VNT mechanism properly and stop the turbo building boost, causing the hesitation. Black smoke may be from the fuel system flinging in fuel expecting a lot of air from the turbo to burn it with but if there isn't boost the fuel won't burn and will pass through the engine and make smoke in the exhaust.

Possibly fixed....

I driven it a few times now with no fault.

Thanks for all the replies.

Are the vacuum hoses the ones that come off the N75? If so I checked those and as many of the turbo pipes as I could see from both underneath and on top and all seemed ok.

Anyway I decided to disconnect the MAF plug and take it for a spin.

No hesitation, no smoke, no judder, smooth revs. Also no EML.

Is it bad to drive it like this for a while?

Can I clean out the MAF?

If you have disconnected the MAF and the fault has cleared then the MAF is likely to be at fault. You could try to clean it but you have to be very careful as they are easily damaged, correct remedy would be to replace it

Just thought I’d clear things up. I bought a genuine Bosch MAF to replace and it turns out the one I already had on the car wasn’t genuine. Previous owner must have bought a cheap one before I purchased it last year.

All issues sorted.

Thanks for all the help and replies.
