Kodiaq 1.4tsi Dsg lurching forward

Featured Replies

Our 1.4 tsi bear seems to have developed an urge to jurk or lurch forward after the engine is switched off. It’s only a small movement. Has anyone else seen this?

Is it a DSG or Manual?

Thread title... DSG.

I'm assuming the car is in P when the engine is turned off?

Yes it’s in park and the auto handbrake status light shows red on the indicator panel on the dials.

I'll go back to my sleepy bear cave and pine over the fact that my Kodi is still waiting the other side of the channel :D

Maybe the DSG box isn't fully disengaging when in P?

So...

Car comes to a halt.

Foot on the brake, gear selector into P, handbrake button pulled.

Foot off the brake, stop button pressed, engine turns off.

Now what happens, the car is lurching forward whilst still being held by the handbrake?

Are you using the handbrake or Autohold?

Are you parking on a slope?

It’s using autohold. Just tried it again this morning and now it’s behaving normally!

I don't think I've ever pulled the handbrake button, other than to show SWMBO that it's got a handbrake button. :)

Thats basically what my SWMBO is doing but someone she still gets it to lurch forward. Haven’t managed to do it myself in her motor.

I'm guessing from what you've said that you have auto-hold turned on. Without that on, the handbrake doesn't come on automatically...

The reason I pull the handbrake button is that I've not yet warmed to the auto-hold feature so generally leave it turned off.

The reason being is I've found in some instances it grabs and... lurches! Is this the issue OP? Trying leaving auto-hold off and see if things improve.

It's all about smoothness for me :D

SWMBO is a big fan of autohold, she somehow can get it to lurch at will, but I’ve never had it happen driving her car ;-(

I will have to see if I can get her out of her auto hold addiction 8-)

Ive only used the handbrake once when reversing up a slope, as that’s the only time I’ve had an issue with the autohold. I do exactly the same as Bignij above and have never had any grabs or lurches.

Physically pulling the handbrake button helps me to sleep at night :D

Yep. I had it on a VW Golf in a previous existence. I love it. Too idle to put the handbrake on manually. It's so tasking. B)

With auto hold enabled, you see the green auto hold light change to display the red hand brake light when you switch the engine off, exactly the same as if you’d manually engaged the handbrake. Listen carefully and you can hear it engage too.

I’m also someone who uses auto hold 99% of the time, and never get any lurching. Two things I’ve noticed:

if you roll to a stop with gentle braking and lift your foot off the brake before the car has come to a complete stop, rather than continuing to roll to a stop like a conventional manual would, the DSG interprets that as getting ready to go again and will start creeping. That might be interpreted as a lurch. It certainly is when my wife does it and needs to stomp the brake to avoid the car going forwards. You need to make sure you bring the car to a complete stop and see the green auto hold light come on, before you take your foot off the brake.

Secondly, if you’re a bit heavy footed when accelerating away with autohold it can lurch as you ask for more acceleration than you intended and then the brakes suddenly release. That very much feels like a lurch. Better in my experience to use a light tap or press until it starts creeping, and then accelerate away.

This is my first DSG and I quickly adapted to the gentle push on the accelerator to release the brakes before accelerating, and feathering the brake pedal to allow the car to creep forward to see at blind junctions. All with stop/ start switched off, and autohold on.
