No clutch

Featured Replies

So, wifey phoned me at the exact moment I was expecting her home today. She doesn't have any mechanical knowledge, so it was a bit hard to tell what had happened.

Anyway, I walked a mile and a half in baking heat to the bottom of the motorway slip road where the car had stopped.

I was impressed, because a couple of allies had stopped to help her - Kent Police Community Bobbies - parked their car behind hers and coned off the area, protecting her from the less than charitable motorists who do not appreciate another motorist in trouble.

Cut to the chase, the clutch wasn't working - one of the cylinders, master or slave, resulting in pedal to the floor, unable to change gear.

So, where do I go to fix this problem without getting ripped off?

My local mechanic, has been dobbed in by some lowlife who doesn't like him doing our cars up (I think I know who the suspect is, because he always boasts that everyone should use main dealers for servicing).

So folks, what am I looking at for a repair here - all options please.

Just bumping this thread.

Does anyone know if this is a doable job at home.

The car is a manual, five speed 2005 Octavia Mk2 Classic 1.9 TDi PD.

According to Mr Haynes, master cylinder is accessible via the footwell without too much dismantling. Slave cylinder fairly straightforward for a five speed box but (as mentioned elsewhere on the forum) major work for the six speed box (transmission out).

Cheers Mike, that is what I was hoping.

Slave and master easily accessible one behind the clutch pedal and the other on the gearbox outside. Sorry I forget which is which. Hoping you can do a search on your issues and choose the correct part plus bleeding afterwards.

Turned out that they were both shot, so I have had them replaced, plus had an oil and filter service for £350.

The guy has also found out where my slow coolant loss is coming from, the rad has a small leak, so that will have to be attended to.

The car hasn't cost me much in the six years I have had it, and I have taken the mileage from 93K to 168K.

Bear with they are good cars and well made on the whole. Fingers crossed for some more trouble free miles

I agree, probably the best, practical car I have ever had. It is only the base model but we have taken it around Europe - France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, and all it needs is fuel and a quick look at the oil and tyre pressures every week.
