Hi guys,

My 2002 Audi A4 Avant's cambelt snapped last week, and inevitably the engine's ruined. My fault for not making sure I'd got it done, but lessons have been learned. I adored that car so I had looked into an engine swap but I think it's probably not worthwhile - so it's time to reluctantly look for a new car.

 

My A4 had the 130BHP 1.9TDI in it, and I'd prefer to have something similar again. My budget is very low as I've got a wedding to pay for but there are a couple of slightly newer A4s (2007-9) coming up which have the 2.0TDI engine in, which I think replaced the 1.9TDI PD engine in the A4, Passat, Octavia, Exeo etc.

I trust the 1.9TDI because it's pretty much bullet proof if properly looked after. I really don't know anything about the 2.0TDI so I just wondered if anyone could give me an idea of what it's like - is it anything like as reliable, economical etc?

 

The other thing about the 1.9 is that high miles aren't so much a problem if it's been well-maintained. Can the same be said about the 2.0L, or should I be avoiding high miles at all costs?

 

Any help really appreciated.

Looking back I’d say the PD was probably the last of the diesels that made economic sense as a keeper.

Reliably dirty though IMO.

Avoiding high miles on a diseasel is a bit pointless surely, given that’s what they’re best at - providing they’ve been looked after.

Might be worth checking engine codes to make sure you’re avoiding the hex drive oil pump lemon on some 2.0’s.

I should have kept my pre-PD 110 Passat, which is still going strong seven years after I passed it on :thinking:

The CR140 and CR170 are centre of dieselgate so best avoided or should be super super super cheap.

 

The ea288 engines are pretty good in my experience.

I know - but I think DPFs etc make the newer ones a timebomb don't they? How do I avoid the hex drive oil pump?

How would I know which is which? Tbf I don't care what it kicks out, as long as it hasn't had the performance-ruining 'fix'.

 

 

As a money saving device best avoided IMO.

What's your budget? That'd be the logical place to start from I guess.

Timebomb on DPF's might be a bit dramatic, although plenty of people seem to see a lot of Regen's happening.

 

2.0 140 BSS engine is the lemon:

Mostly related to Superb's, but I 'm not sure if it's exclusively.
