Brake advice

Featured Replies

Hello, probably an already discussed topic but update thread just, but I'm wondering what would be the best set of brakes for a 2008 vRS tdi ? The car is 230bhp+ and a mountain of torque and the ordinary discs and pads although weak but not bad are simply not stopping it lol

I was hoping to go with some grooved and drilled discs and pads but what brand and size is best fitted for mine?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I had ebc groved discs and yellow stuff pads on mine before  I sold it.

Yea was looking at stuff ebc and brembos came up seen 312mm and 345mm too

If i remember rightly there’s 2 different sized disc sizes on the front and 2 different sized pads.

Rears I think 2 different sized discs and 3 different pad sizes!

Yea I seen someone put 312mm on front and 346mm on back or somethingi could probably fit them as I have zenith 18s but I’m just wondering what is recommended or suggestions seen ceramic pads but there very expensive over 100 € just for front

don't get drilled disks, they have a tendency to crack under heat.  grooved, dimpled or j hooks will do just fine.

personally having larger discs on the rear wont look right .  also you should then change the callipers if you're going to do something do it right,  the standard brakes/size are more than capable.

When was the last time you changed to brakes/discs/fluid?

you don't need ceramic brakes unless your tracking it.

what have you done to get yours to 230+ ??

Thanks yea was thinking anywhere I can get say brembo grooved discs ? Hard to get them for the vRS and where to get decent pads ?  Preferably brembo but if there is better from other people's experiences I'll consider that too.

The car ran 180bhp standard (normal that vag can produce more or less than stated i am told lol) on the dyno got it remapped to 225 and added k&n panel performance filter and run sometimes millers oil through the diesel being Ireland sometimes fuel not up to scratch. But the filter and millers oil do make that noticeable different in power.

The car is more economical too, I don't drive the sh!t out of it only when overtaking it's handy still on original clutch and still feels fine, no slipping yet haha.

The torque is a bit on the high side to be honest being fwd if the road is greasy or slightly damp the front wheel's can be spun without any hassle at all in 1st and 2nd if you floor it. Mountain of torque just. Everything else very good, car is just irreplaceable.

hmm stage 2 normally only gets the TDI up to about 215/220

anyway back to brakes, personally brembo are overpriced

my vote its for mintex discs and ATE pads

Must have a look at those thanks lad, removal of the dpf and egr would be stage 2 so hopefully they won't play up or stage 2 it is

Continental sport contact 2 had Michelin pilot sport 3s but didn't last 11000 miles but this maybe normal for the power

I like ebc red stuff and ebc discs

Don't think stock brembo discs are anything special other than the brand name and you will also find a lot of their discs are no longer made in Italy but  in China

I can’t open that link for some reason, yea brembos is what I thought more brand than performance unless you spend 2000+

try  copy and manually paste the link into another window

Wow their savage looking is that just for the front ? Look the part. Did you get them?

yes it is just for the front only,

I've tried ebc red stuff pads with stock pagid discs but found they were a bit too harsh for standard discs so I was to go for ebc red stuff again I would use them with ebc grove discs

Their probably brilliant but very expensive just for the front as I want to get both back and front done too.

  • 3 weeks later...

ATE Ceramic pads and matched ATE PowerDisc rotors.

Motul RBF600 or 660 brake fluid (you'll need to change that every 12 months - 18 months at most)

If it's 2008 then the slide pin rubbers are probably worn - change them.

I'd have a think about replacing the brake hoses too.  Either OEM spec or the braided lines.
