Replacing blower control unit 6Q1907521A (climatronic)

Featured Replies

Hi

My gf has a mk2 fabia where the blower has been acting up for a few years now. Usually it goes on full speed all the time, sometimes it doesn't go at all and it goes even if the climatronic is all shut off. Have replace the climatronic display/control unit as it was simple, no improvements. Now it has finally stopped working altogether and it's hot as hell outside so I'm stuck with the problem.

I'm 99.9% certain it's the blower control unit (fan control, fan regulator, many names.. doing the same as the resistor pack on non-climatronic versions). Parts no seems to be 6Q1907521, 6Q1907521A or 6Q1907521B depending on where you look.

Anyway, I've removed the upper glove box and passenger airbag. Using an inspection camera I can clearly see where it's sitting but looking at https://workshop-manuals.com/ I see that it is screwed on the inside of the fan housing / ventilation duct / somewhere. And removal instruction says that dash panel and blower needs to come off.

Now to my rather desperate question; is there any way to do this without removing the dash panel?

This is what the part looks like:

Cheers

6Q1907521A was superseded by 6Q1907521B on Nov 1 2009.

Can you get enough access to remove the fan/blower unit? Once that's removed, it appears to be a single screw holding the part in position. See here:

When I had to have the blower motor replaced, they said it was dash out job. You might just get lucky but don't hold your breath!

A dealership will say that, even if it's not strictly true.  Sometimes it's faster (for them) to take the dash out than to struggle with poor access, but as a DIY'er with plenty of time, that's generally a struggle we're prepared to put up with.

Good point, Wino. That said, I took it to a respected independent for that job. They still base quotations on dealers time limits, just charge less per hour. They showed me a photo of the work being done, dash out, steering wheel removed etc so they didn't flim-flam me. I would assume its still quicker then  struggling, if you have removed them before, a few times!

See my thread here for some more info:

It's defo a dash out job, 6hrs labour plus parts. Should have been £600 odd but the dealer messed up the pricing and we got it for £328.

I had our neighbour price the job who is a good mechanic and has done plenty of dash out jobs and he would have cost more than the dealer. He was happy to do it but suggested that the dealer would be better as it'll come with 2 years parts and labour warranty.

 Thats a great price, with the warranty too! Did they change the whole blower motor unit? They are quite pricey just for the part!

The old one is off! Just waiting for the new part now...

No way in h*ll this could be done without removing the dashboard. However it's not that horrible job to do as it may first sound.

...Just be careful to reconnect all the proper bits and bobs safely. I didn't want to risk it and time was an issue, hense forking out to get it done.

Ok, job done.

The fan regulator had been broken for a couple of years rendering the fan always on full speed no matter the setting or even turning off the climatronic. So finally the fan stopped working entirely and I was forced to fix it.

Appears the fan was worn out so had to be replaced as well.

All is working fine now and the job is not as bad as it may sound. (And I didn't set off any of the airbags)

Definitely a DIY-job for anyone doing 5+ years of casual car repairs and being able to follow instructions.

How long did you take, doing the work?
