TomTom oddity - emergency use only motorway junctions

Featured Replies

I lent my TomTom system to a friend to drive down to a town called Iver in buckinghamshire from the midlands.

It took him down the M40 , onto the M25 then back out onto the M4 and off at the first available junction which is sensible enough.

Once he left the residential street he just told it to take him home but instead of reversing the path it instead took him across country , direct onto the M25 midway between the M40 and M4 junctions. Only trouble was that it took him to an unofficial "emergency use only" junction here

It was only signposted as such about 20 yards away from the carriageway so he just thought "sod it" and joined the motorway , but surely TomTom should be aware of unavailable roads and not try and use them.

Use sl09eu as the start point and B93 8NP as the end point if you want to try and replicate this. Can those of you with other brands see what you get.

My VW sat nav once directed me to use one of these exits on the M62 near Goole, I chose to ignore it.

My Garmin GPS Map76CS wants me to drive down a priverate road all the time, I'm tempted as it a good shortcut!!

My TomTom thinks there's an exit anti-clockwise after Clakets & before the M25/M26 split

 it is!!!

My Tom Tom tried to get me to go the wrong way up a one way street earlier today  It's inability to simply reverse a route is a little annoying though.

My car is covered in slurry and manure too, cant see out the back at all after it took me down a road that was ever decreasing in width with increasing poo over the surface. After a few miles it even had a grassy strip down the middle.

Convinced me that satnav is best used in conjunction with a good map.

I think i need a new software disc for mine because mine always trys taking me off roading,it seems to think rutted dirt tracks are normal roads

We were out house hunting at the weekend trying to find a quaint little cottage in a village. The TomTom directed us down a bumpy little road that soon turned into a muddy mess and I got stuck (1.7mm tread depth on the front wheels  ).

The track did lead to the cottage but what the satnav diddnt tell us was that the other end of the road was nicely surfaced

I know what you mean goochie, the sat nav is usually correct that the road its taking you down does go to where you want to be,it just doesn't say you have to be driving a jeep to drive down that road:rofl:

The other thing that annoys me is that it seems to have no rules on calculating an alternative Vs. turning around.

If you cant go where it wants you to it will calculate an alternative - sometimes that alternative is just up to the next suitable turning place.

Yep agree, there are some oddities. I have a similar issue when heading home up the M6 going on to the M6 Toll even though I have use Toll Roads enabled and I am using the full length of the Toll it still tries to divert me off and just after entering the M6 Toll after the last free exit points going north it tries to direct me down an emergency lane/single lane track.

THe new maps are not that accurate either, on comingback from my parents it tries to send me the wrong way up a one way street which has been like that for over 30 years!!!

Sorry having said all that I still wouldn't be without my TTG 700, I don't leave home without it  the Traffic Reporting is excellent and has saved me hours of time

Map data is so out of data it's unbelievable.

Particulary for the portable types TomTom, Garmin etc who buy the older maps as their much cheaper than the newest ones.

If you bought one last year it's likely that the map data came from 2000/01

If you've got the money for the subscriptions theres only one navigation system on the market thats any good. Trafficmaster.

Another strange anomaly!

TomTom 500 stalls & re-starts on the M25 after J1 (nothbound) towards the Dartford Tunnel. Don't happen when going South!

Nothing wrong with the TomTom on the hp iPAC, even before the upgrade was installed!

Strange
