Wheel Cylinder Removal Question

Featured Replies

Its leaking so time for a replacement. I seem to be having a problem disconnecting the brake fluid pipe. I started to unscrew the connection fitting but I noticed the copper pipe was turning as well. If I had continued I would have simply twisted the pipe until it collapsed. I've sprayed it with WD40 and left it for 24 hours. Before I have another go I thought I would ask if anyone has any tips. Would a bit of gentle heat work?

Also, I have removed the socket head cap screw, is there anything else holding the wheel cylinder in place?

Cheers,

No clue,

But ill give a bump :)

Your brake pipe will need replacing.

Just break it and use a socket on the end to remove the union.

Just change the pipe up to the flexi, not a big job, could even fit stainless flexi's while you're at it

Reel of copper pipe is about £13, a few 10mm unions and a flaring tool for about £25

I used to always panic when I got an advisory on corroded brake pipes on MOT's but this summer I replaced the full pipework on my Mk1 Golf and I'm glad I did.

Learnt a very useful new skill and whenever they come up on MOT again I'll just change them properly rather than wire brushing them and hoping for the best

Thanks for the feedback. I've decided to wimp out and let the garage do it. I had a look at the union on the flexi pipe and that has quite a bit of corrosion on it which means I might be chasing the problem further down the line. I suppose it's all down to confidence and know your limitations, particularly with safety related stuff. Looks like I'm going to have to put my hand in my pocket. . Thanks all the same - Normski
