Rattling noise when starting 1.9 tdi

Hello,

i have rattling noise when starting my 1.9 tdi Bxe,is only do when enginy is hot,sometimes the noise are very loud,anyone have same problem?

Since you mention BXE engine I suspect the camshaft or the conrod bearings. If you're lucky this can be fixed (altough this is easily 500GBP), if things get worse and the conrod fails you're looking into an expensive repair (new engine)

 

Just look for BXE conrod failure.  I've seen multiple video's on youtube with similar sounds. The BXE (and BLS if I'm correct) are known to have these issues and many of them eventually fail. (If they fail during driving, the conrad will be slammed through the block, causing a big hole -> End of the engine)

 

Off course, I suggest a mechanic to have a proper look, but highly recommend not to run the engine too much, if it IS the conrod issue you're lucky this hasn't smashed your engine completely dead yet.

I know about bxe problems,If that is camshaft i think the engine will be dead but its only happens when starting,engine sound mint when drive,i hope its something wrong with starter motor or flywheel

are you turning it off on purpose to replicate the sound or does the car struggle to start when hot?

 

I can't hear any abnormal noises on that video, only that of a diesel stalling which can make a bit of a racket

It struggle to start,when it tries to create a longer starter,the noise becomes louder and engine shakes and still not start,after 3 or 4 try back to normal

Could it be the anti shudder valve is jamming closed due to oil build-up, sounds like the engine is just firing but can't sustain due to lack of air until the valve is shocked open.

Clean anti shudder valve today,do engine diagnostic-no faults,still same problem

I had exactly the same problem with my 1.9tdi and it was the battery! 

 

Before you you start replacing shudder valves etc., have the battery tested or replace it. It's a well known phenomenon that a hot engine requires more juice from the battery than a cold engine. 

 

I changed my my battery and it cured the fault instantly. 

 

Also, a tired starter motor can also cause these symptoms, but my money is on the battery.

Agree could be battery or starter, when cold the ecu will fuel the car so will start with weak battery/starter  but when warm the engine has to be turning over at a certain speed before ecu will allow fuel to be injected so counter intuitively as it sounds it can be harder to start a warm engine.

Thanks for reply,am ready change temperature sensor but doesn’t help so try with new battery,

where and what size battery should i get for 1.9 any recommendations?

New battery only help for fiew weeks,today after 100 miles trip have problem to start warm engine,after 5 times try finally start,

I found information that in 1.9 engines there is a problem with ecu that gives no enough fuel when firing the engine and reprogramming it removes the fault,anyone have done this?
