Door lock (with key) problem

Featured Replies

I have an annoying fault with my '99 Octavia TDi.

This car has no remote locking, so I have to use a key all the time (and to be honest, I prefer this anyway. No, really. I'm not bitter or anything....)

But...the driver's side door lock has today broken, in some subtle and doubtless expensive way. It felt "wrong" when I locked the door, and I had to struggle to pull the damn key out of the lock. Pulling hard will free it, but triggers that horrendous and stupid VW security flaw / feature, wherein all the windows promptly unwind.

So I have a choice of having the doors unlocked but the windows shut, or the doors locked but the windows all open.

Marvellous. Quite, quite marvellous.

There is a just-about-viable alternative, of locking the doors on the inside, scrambling over the centre and out of the passenger door, and using the lock on that door. It keeps you supple, I can tell you.

Any idea what this is going to cost me? New locks? Could the barrels of the driver and passenger side locks be swapped over maybe?

On a related issue, whilst I was getting this fixed, would it be possible to ask the dealer to disable that twist-the-key-to-open-the-windows feature? I know this has been a nightmare for VW owners, especially in the S.E. where it is well known to the scrotes. Fortunately, its presence on Skodas seems to have escaped their attention.
