Engine misfire issue and oil on spark plug, 2006 1.6 FSI

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Before I start getting into my issue, would just like to say what a brilliant resource brisokda is and a huge thanks to everyone who contributes. Having owned a skoda for just over two years, I've been able to learn a lot about my car, and cars in general from lurking and reading. Hopefully I'll gain enough knowledge to be able to share back in the future. This forum is definitely a huge plus point to being a skoda owner.

Monday morning: short drive, car starts jerking and misfiring. "Control System for Exhaust" light comes on. I limp it the last 30 seconds home and start to check it out.

Changed out the spark plugs (one of which was coated in oil). This initially helped but after a bit of a test drive, the misfire returned.

Has anyone had similar experiences with oil entering the plugs and causing a misfire, or do you have any advise of things to try before sending it to the garage (really trying to avoid a huge garage bill if possible).

Thanks,

Mark.

I'm thinking this could be a leaking rocker cover gasket, that's sending oil into the well and thus causing the misfire, but that's purely speculation at this point.

Coil pack, a cheap fix, I have replaced 2 in 6 years and the circumstance for change is what you posted.

Look forward to you posting info.

coil pack for the cylinder with the oily plug.

Thanks Jong.

Changed the coil pack this morning, misfire remains.

You are going to need a compression test on the 4 cylinders.

Is it cylinder 3 with the plug that is fouling?

?

How many miles has the car / engine done?

It's actually cylinder 4, (right hand side as you look at the engine)

Car is a 2006 model and has done approx 116k

I'll try to get that compression test done

Is it run on super unleaded?

Yes, it's unleaded petrol.

All petrol is Unleaded. but it is 95 ron,

or Super Unleaded 97 ron or 99 ron.

(Super Unleaded at BP, ESSO, Sainsburry, Texaco, Gulf is 97 ron,  Tesco Momentum 99, Shell V-Power Nitro + & Costco are 99 ron in the UK.)

Super Unleaded would be good as long as not using Long Life Oil.

Fixed Services and the Recommended Fixed Service Oil.   Long LifeOil short life engine IMO.

Too late now though, so valves and bores need checked.

Gotcha. I've occasionally put in the super unleaded, but not always. Petrol prices are so damn high at the moment. Guess it might come out costing me in the long run. Like you say too late now though.

It's had fixed services and fixed oil for most of it's life at least.

Tesco Momentum 99 is 5 pence a litre more expensive than Tesco 95 Unleaded, as is Sainsbury Super Unleaded over Sainsbury 95 ron,

both are likely cheaper than Shell, BP , ESSO, Gulf, Texaco etc 95 ron.

?

What spec oil is in your engine according to your reciepts,

is it VW 502 so 5w 40 FS (Full Synthetic)

and not VW504 so 5w 30 FS Long Life.

The FSI engines really don't like 95 RON fuel, sadly.

Last service receipt says 5W40 FS for the oil.

Understood about the fuel. Will try to go 97 ron+ in future.

Still got to get this all sorted first though.

Compression test then.

See what the story is on that cylinder, and the tech / mechanic might use a Borescope,  have a look see down the plug holes.

Thanks for all the advice.

Little bit of further info. Turns out the misfire was not related to the same cylinder as the oil leak. Diagnoistics showed it to be cylinder 1 causing the misfire, and low and behold, coil pack replacement on cylinder 1 has resolved the misfire. Car now runs as normal.

I'll still need that 4th cylinder looked at, as definitely it is not right to have the oil leak.
