Do you actually need load resistors? (Change to LED)

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I know it's been a big topic on here, but I've searched...

Can any experts confirm, if when changing Halogen bulbs to LED...

Do you..

A- Need to install load resistors if you get dash error message

OR

B- Just use vcds to wipe the error?

I just bought a set of LED bulbs to replace the Halogen drl in my wife's 12 plate Golf. They work but you get error message on dash. (used hers as a test lol)

(I know the drl for skoda is different fitting - but same principle)

Thanks in advance.

I think on many, its suck it and see! Give it a go, clear any code if possible and see if error stays clear. If not, resistors might just be the answer. You sound a bit sceptical of the need or are resisting the resistors. I don't think they are expensive but hey, buy, try and sigh!

If you have vids, you should be telling US if they are needed or not!:notme:

Haha thanks...

I'm saving up to get a rosstech cable so won't be able to post up on here yet.

Thanks for reply., I can't believe the difference the LED made... Like night and day (pardon the pun)

I fitted LEDs  to the DRLs on my Yeti. The one on the drivers side had a resistor fitted the other did not need one for over 12 months then the maxidot told me to check nearside DRL. It was working. Fitted a resistor to it and the maxidot cleared.

Cheers for reply, do fitting resistors involve soldering or is it plug & play?

It'll depend how well the LED bulb emulates a halogen bulb. The most common method is just a small resistor across the two terminals, if this isn't to spec (cheap LEDs), the can overheat causing damage to the LED and bulb holder.

As for the warnings, if your BCM supports LED's, the warnings can be coded out. Unfortunately, VCDS can't do this, you'll need VCP/ODIS-e and someone who knows what they are doing.

Cheers

I'm yet to find any LED lights which don't put on the dash warning.

I tried a variety of sidelights and replacements for the fog lights, but all put on the dash warning (even those claiming to be canbus friendly). I eventually purchased the resistors, but uninstalled them when I realised how hot they became. I also struggled to find anywhere suitable to mount them.

I ended up changing all the interior blights to LED, but stayed with conventional bulbs externally.

May give it another go when the DRL's finally blow...........
