Flat tyre today

Featured Replies

So today returning a nice drive in the country the low pressure alarm in my 206tst went off.    First time I have had a flat tyre in many years.  Luckily I was in a small town and found a flat place off the road to stop and investigate the rear tyre.     Swapping to the space saver spare was reasonably painless so a few thoughts below:

  • the inbuilt tyre pressure system works and tells you which tyre is low
  • on my car (6000km) the tyre bolts came off easily with the supplied hand wrench
  • the tongs to remove wheel nut caps work well
  • the supplied skoda tools are sufficient for the task
  • all of this was on an almost new car, not sure how well the tools would work on a car with lots of miles
  • identifying the jacking point on the car is not easy and would not want to do it in the dark- good thing to work out in advance!
  • the 19 inch wheel just fits in the spare wheel well, the floor almost goes down flat over it
  • driving on the space saver was not hard, in fact I could not tell the difference
  • the speed limiter set at 80kph was a good way to not over speed
  • ACC would not work, not sure if this was just because of the tyre pressure warning
  • chocks are a good thing to carry!
  • disposable gloves and hand wipes are also good to have in the car
  •

Now I have to find out if the tyre is repairable and if not, how many other tyres I have to change.

We've had a slow puncture in the rear offside tyre on the Wife's 66 plate Fabia for the last month or so. The TPMS was pinging as the tyre was losing about 6 psi a week. Yesterday I took the wheel off and found a small nail in the centre of the tread. The Skoda tools are good for the job, but the wheel refused to budge due to the corrosion reaction between the Alloy wheel and the steel centre boss. I had to place a piece of rubber against the alloy (to prevent damage) and then hit a piece of wood with a hammer around the wheel to loosen the wheel. Once off I cleaned up both of the mating surfaces and applied a coating of copper slip. The local tyre fitter repaired the puncture and all is good again. I also removed the other rear tyre to clean and copper slip.

I leave a pair of gloves in the tool tray in case of a puncture when I'm out .

Always dreaded having a flat with no spare wheel. Anyone had this experience? Did the supplied tyre repair kit work? Did you have to call out roadside assistance to help?

I would always get a spare wheel and tool kit if one wasn't supplied with the car.  I have seen a few cars on the hard shoulder on a RAC / AA jack while they've gone off to get a new tyre or repair, not much fun at three o'clock in the morning I would guess.

I noticed a big nail in a front tyre the other week. Tyre pressure warning did not sound. I preferred the optional tyre pressure measuring system on a Passat I had - it used gauges in the wheels to measure pressure and could display them.

I took it to the tyre place and they checked if the nail actually went through... it did and started go deflate. Not sure if a tyre repair kit would have been any good - the hole was quite large.

I had the tyre fixed but had I been somewhere where it was going flat at least I ordered the car with a spare.

As for original poster saying ACC did not work - you mention speed limiter. If you switch on the limiter (the button underneath on the ACC stalk) it operates instead of ACC.

Yes about 5 years ago in my Mk2 Greenline which had no spare as standard. I caught the corner of a metalled kerb and split the sidewall. Of course the bottle of gloop was absolutely no use at all, so a Sunday afternoon was written off waiting for roadside assistance and a new tyre to be fitted. I guess I was lucky it was during tyre-fitter opening hours.

I've had a spare ever since - of course that means that since that day I've never had a puncture!:D

The ACC won't work with the spare on as its a different diameter to the standard tyres. And the car can recognise that wheel is spinning faster than the other 3.

Took your advice and had a look for myself. I was pleasantly surprised to find the Superb has juicy thick reinforced tabs welded to the body lip where the jack goes. Makes a change from jacking on the usual VAG flimsy sill lips, which garages always manage to bend, mangle and even tear on all my previous cars, even the 2 tonne Alhambra! (and deny)

as @xman it's cause diameter, solution:

replaced stock 205/55r16 by full diameter 205/65r16
weren't easy put it in cause back side plastic

diameter comparison to 215/55r17 and 225/55r17:
205/55r16 _ -5.3% _ -6.7%, this huge size difference cancels usage of cruise control
205/65r16 _ +0.8% _ -0.7%, not tested yet
