Running in

Featured Replies

Page 221 on my new octavia handbook says that for the first 1000km each gear should not exceed 3/4trs of the max speed for each gear but I cannot see anything in the handbook which says what the max speed is for each of the 5 gears (1.6FSI). Where can I find information regarding the rev/speed range for each gear in order to put this into practice?

I

3/4 max speed in each gear IS 3/4 of the rev range.... ;)

Unless you drive like an absolute high speed idiot thru every gear then just drive normally and you will have no problem. Let us face it with our road conditions in the UK you can hardly sustain prolonged high speeds for more than a few minutes.

I takes several thousand miles before any modern engine truly beds in and in the case of diesels it is usually into double thousands before you here and feel that engine change.

It took me some getting used to the running in reductions especially limiting the rev's as I previously had a Honda Accord which have very high reving engines. The Octy does reach that high on the dial, but it is a Diesel compared to Petrol.

I couldn't believe the power and torque in the engine of the 2.0TDi and all at such low rev's, it changed my driving style. But it is great to know if I want and put my foot down it goes like stink

hello, i have a 1.6FSI i dont realy understand what should i do in the first 1000 km

i just got my OCT on Sunday, i have been through the manual but couldnt get this part, my prev car was jetta, and on the manual there was a max speed not an RPM values

cheers everyone

Rough guide used to be no more than 2/3rds to 3/4s of max revs in each gear up to 1000km, then push it more and more towards maximum revs [but NOT over] for next 500km.

Salesman of my previous Octy 1vRS said he found ones that had been "caned" were better than ones that had been pussyfooted, but I don't know what he assessed as "caned". I prefer to stick to the book.

I think it does it good to carefully use near to the top end revs every so often once run in, even if you don't normally drive like that.

Besides mailing here I thought I'd mail skoda customer services (I asked the dealer but he failed to come back to me). Their reply just receved is as follows:

"I can advise that, during the first 1000 km, the speed in each gear should be restricted to ¾ of the maximum recommended engine revolutions as indicated by the vehicle?s rev counter."

so I guess thats 3/4trs before you hit the red! though I would have thought each gear would have had its own different ratios of revs...

I think it's mostly the engine you're running in, so it is its revs that matter - the gear ratio would be irrelevant to that. But I'm sure the other bits also run in a bit at the same time - so gears get smoother [in theory!] even brakes and tyres are meant to be "run in" a bit, by taking it easy for a few hundred km.

Are there differences in running in a DSG? mines due next week and is a lease vehicle so i doubt i will get a run thru with it.

Just drive it if you leave it in auto mode and are not heavy footed the gearbox and engine management will sort itself out without you even thinking about it.

What is it with all these worries about running in we are in the 21st century not the early 1940s, unless you drive like an absolute heavy footed idiot it really is academic.
