New car key

Featured Replies

Hello about Wednesday this week the red LED light kept flashing on my key so I opened it and took the battery out and put it back in again then I tried pressing the lock unlock button and nothing worked I went over to the Skoda dealership and they said I probably need a new key which is around £157 and I was thinking are you able to just buy a key from eBay and connect it to the car ( I’ve also changed the battery for the key in the past a few weeks before this could that have anything to do with it not working)

ive a skoda fabia 2008 1.2

Thanks Ken

Might just need recoding to the car if its fallen out of sync.

A new key would need botht he immobiliser and remote coding to the vehicle.

Can you do the coding yourself ??

The remote coding can be done with VCDS diagnostic tool, the immobiliser needs to be done by a specialist with the correct equipment.

If you have a key that the remote can be changed seperately you dont need to change the whole thing.

The key part is fine it starts the car and locks it manually it’s just the remote part that won’t work do you think I would just need to replace the remote part of the key

If it seperates then yes.

Ok thanks very much.

Seems odd that it will start the car if the fob is out of sync. Perhaps the chip is fine and just the remote is duff. Try removing the battery and carefully clean the internals. Re-assemble and try again. Might also be a good idea whilst doing this, to disconnect the main car battery. and re-connect after ten or so mins.

Also you didnt say if it was a new battery that was fitted or just the same one? Surely a new battery would do something

Ken2869,  who at the Dealership said you probably needed a new key, was it someone at the Service Desk?

Maybe say at which Dealership and if the Dealer Principal reads this or gets told about it that member of staff can get retrained, or some training other than in up-selling.
