Roof bar max load

Featured Replies

The manual states maximum roof load of 100kg.

Is this the maximum for driving loaded?

I’m looking at hard shell roof tents which weigh 70kgs I weigh 65kgs which puts it over!

Or can you go over if the vehicle is static? I obviously wouldn’t be up there if it’s moving.

Edit

Just found this after reading more on the tent web site.

Vehicle load ratings are based on ‘dynamic loads’, which is a load rating for when the vehicle is in motion. Therefore the weight of the people inside doesn’t count, as there will only be people inside a TentBox when a vehicle is stationary.

Vehicles can take a vast amount of weight on their roofs when stationary, as all of the weight bears directly down onto the structural steel frame.”

Ill leave the topic on the forum as it may be of interest to others.

Plenty do fit Roof Tents to a Yeti and then sleep in them.

Obviously there is the dynamic load to be considered by the vehicle manufacturer which doesn’t apply when you are up there (unless you are having a very good time).:notme:

I would think the main reason for the weight limit is a high up load and its effect on cornering leading to instability or even rolling over.

However there must come a load even when static on the roof bars where they damage the structure of the car where they mount. As they allow for dynamic loads, I would think you should not consider exceeding about twice the stated limit? So two adults, the tent itself and a few items in with you.. and limited dynamic loading
