Octavia 2.0 petrol engine life

Featured Replies

Sorry if this has been covered, had a quick search and couldn't find it.

My 2.0 Sport 2007 Octavia has just done 120,000 miles.  I had the timing belt changed a few thousand miles ago, and was told there was another chain or timing belt that also had to be done, around 100,000 miles.  Couldn't get it done then, car is in garage now, and have been told there is other wear and tear on the camshafts and other places that means there isn't much point just changing the timing chain for this.

Is this reasonable wear?  Have I been negligent in looking after it?  The car is probably worth less than £2k and it looks like I need to spend about that to keep it going (wheel bearings seem fragile, full service).  Should I just let it die, save the money for the replacement?

?

Do you trust the mechanic telling you about the wear?  If you do then trust their opinion on spending what is needed to get another year or 2 out of it,

if you think you can sell it then maybe just do that then.
